Look at your Alternator Belts 300SD

I've had my 300D for about 5 years. It had 150K on it when I got it and now about 170K. I changed the Alternator belts (2) recently since I saw on this Forum, TY, that if a belt breaks it can get tangled up behing a big steel plate up front. Wow, I noticed this Big Plate and feel better I replaced the belts. Hadn't really noticed this big plate, I guess a harmonic balancer, not sure what it is but really close to the spinning belts. BTW Carquest books gave me a belt one inch too short. When I got old belts off they were able to cross reference better. I like their Gates belts.

they must have given you belts for an 83 up SD... the 82 takes a 1035mm matched set of continental metric belts. gates will slip in short order...

I've seen variations in belt length between manufacturing lots. So, if you are carrying spare belts, beware of this. IIRC, it only comes into play with the water pump/alternator belt pair (which might be operated with only one for a short period of time, in an emergency).

Oh, I didn't know Continental were better. Humm. Not sure where to get them. Gates don't appear to slip, yet.

gates is 3/8", (9.5mm) continental are true 10mm width. and if you get a matched set, they will last much longer. the gates are already "worn" in the eyes of the pulleys, so they sit lower in the groove. it won't take long before they start to slip.

Hey Steve,

Long time no see...........glad to see you back.

John has it right on the money............the Gates are starting off "in the hole" so to speak. You'll probably have to get the Continentals on line.
