So I replaced the GP I broke, but....

A few weeks ago, I was R&R a few fuel lines and decided to see how stuck the GPs were. This in a '96 E300 606.912.

#3 came out like a charm. It was the only one. I tweaked on #4 for a bit but decided, hey, the GP system is working flawlessly, why mess with it.

Indeed, So I start the car, and its a little rough, but I assume its the air still in the lines. Nope, not when the GP light starts to come on at 65 mph!

So anyway, pulled the intake back off and removed the "stuck" #4, which I assume I shorted out when I was "tweaking it". Reamed it, and its neighbor #5 and stuck two new Bosch GPs in.

It still doesnt have the same flawless start it used to have. WTF did I do to it? It fires fine, but then one cyl srarts to nail a wee bit. By 40C the engine is its usual good sealing, strong running diesel.

There is still a small fuel leak behind the fuel solenoid ( stripped the T-30 bolt on one side), but this tiny leak never caused it before.

should I have tested these before installing? I dont like the nailing; this is my third and best running 606 so far. I dont want to mess it up!

I'll be going back in to EZ out that t-30 and put a Viton O on the solenoid, but what? VOM test the 3 new plugs or pull 'em and glow em?

The only way to know for sure is to pull the Plugs and Glow them.

The Glow Plug below ohmed out OK; but notice that the center is hotter than the tip. This Plug is no good because it should start of being the hottest at the very tip.

you could easily have damaged one of them putting them in, and one could be bad right out of the box.
can you tell which pot is nailing? pop the injector lines off one at a time when it's banging and see if you can isolate it?
I got one of the radio shack clamp ac/dc amp meters, and it's pretty good at testing loads, but visually is the best method for verifying a good plug.

how hard is it to pull the injectors on those motors? it might be easier to pull the injectors, and hit the key and look in each pot for tip glow...

Oh, it isnt that hard, but I dont think I want to go that far into diagnostics; it has to be 3,4 or 5.. This was a FLAWLESSLY running 606 until I swapped some GP's. The top of the engine hasnt been messed with as I just replaced the original return lines. Your a tech and I am a numbers guy, weekend gearhead. Sometimes I think my "casual skills" and lack of time preclude me from really enjoying these cars. I've grown to really dig them, but it isnt a lease payment/free maintenace deal. That'd be too easy!

The BIG mistake I made was forgetting to crank the beast after I reamed the GP holes. . But I did remember grease and I did use a gun cleaning setup to clean the threads. WHAT SMOKE!

Anyway , yesterday the dreaded GP light came on during normal driving. Just like last time, flickering on and off.

So I have to go back in. Have to get that stripped t-30 out and put a Viton O ring on the fuel stop as well. Then it'll be ready for a Buffalo winter. Its first!

We had a cold snap back in OCT, and this puppy fired flawlessly at 26 F. Why did I even touch those GP's!? ( new to me car with no record of R&R them is why)

Thanks guys, guesss I just needed to vent, a shoulder to cry on! I know what needs to be done.

Do the glow plugs on a hot engine. Mine almost unscrewed themselves when I did it on a hot engine. They were so easy to remove after doing it before on a cold engine and breaking one off and having to drill it out.

pot is nailing? What does this mean? Is it a clatter caused by a bad plug?

Some times the cylinders are refered to as POTS. when the piston in all the way down it looks like a pot. Flower pot.

A 5 cylinder engine would be a 5 pot etc.....
