Manual swap is about my personal enjoyment while I use the car. :D. Reason being is I have every part to do it except a shifter, shift linkage bars, and driveshaft front section, and the swap wouls improve the basic reliability and usability of the car, also making it more desirable for resale if it comes to that. Even among enthusiasts, an auto 240 is not especially popular |

The PO has had the most unbelievably bad luck with this car and crooked auto shops over the last year, totalling thousands in repairs, think she's already spent that much on what turned out to be a bad plug on the back of the alternator she fixed herself, so she might be done for good. She has had numerous people flat out lie, gouge, and mis-diagnose trying the milk the absolute most amount of cash in the sake of "safety". It does not pay to be a woman with an old car who it dependant on auto shops, even a couple of places I suggested to her where I had a good experience turned out to either be relentlessly sexist, or bill padders in her case |

wow. what a perfect opportunity to flaunt this forum! she's even got a head start, knowing how to fix the alternator harness... |
Nice! But you just sold a bunch of your w123 parts off! I think this proves you need to get a warehouse to store all your parts in event these deals happen again!
Or you need to stop moving!;) . |

At least the manual trans was already in there. |
Paid $300 for mine when I got it in August '06. It was driveable but not road-safe. Needed a new windshield, new tires, had to get a few things in the engine fixed that I don't remember off the top of my head... It was an abandoned car so it definitely needed a bit of love.

I had gone to LA to find a replacement 190D, 5-spd and had no luck. I kept noticing an ad for a '76 240D for $500. Finally curiosity got the better of me and I called about it. Guy bought it at a police auction, as it had been abandoned and impounded by the city. Although an Audi guy, he couldn't see the 240 going to the crusher, so he picked it up for pennies, went to the junkyard, replaced missing trim, battery tray, battery, and fired it up. They had even provided a replacement key for it. I bought it from him and immediately did some work . . . replaced the power steering hydraulic hose, and along with it, all mew rubber seals for the primer pump, which had to be disassembled to get to the hose. STarted taking car of all the other fuel leaks. Drove it back to Montana with me, found a sister car in the local junkyard, grabbed the injectors out of it, and ran to a friends shop with it. Also, I did replace all the seats while still in Southern CA. Then I drained it from bumper to bumper, refilled all components with proper additives and had it aligned. We also adjusted the valves and did a compression test. Then I drove it (The Pumpkin . . .gawd was she ugly!!!) for three years, only changing oil and filters. about 5 years ago, after arriving in Florida, and buying my 300D, I sold it to Peter Hedary, who still owns it. If the paint weren't in such bad shape, and if it could be easily retrofitted for A/C, I would have happily kept it and put money into it. Was a great car that I got for a very low price and more than got my money out of it . . . on mileage alone!!!!

well, Finally got the car in the air and I have an actual butchers bill of things to repair now-
The car needs immediately- Repair of leaking driver front caliper both rear axles which are torn and leaking, or all 4 boots Transmission resolution so it actually moves upper passenger ball joint/connection to sway bar(for want of what its actually called) The car needs shortly- lower driver side ball joint rear wheel bearings The car needs eventually as far as body work (rust)- Driver and passenger rear wheel arches rust repair Driver and passenger rusted rear floor pans starting passenger front fender |
If you want to double......hell, triple your money PM me....:)

Now the 240 is up to $3.00. ;)

I won't sell it for less than the value of a tasty falafel pocket. 5.99.
I have now invested money into parts Coming in the mail are lots of goodies! Also had the flywheel on my shelf resurfaced and neutral balanced. What remains to be sourced are a slave cylinder and release bearing that don't look like they came from the bottom of a salt water marsh, then I should have all my parts needed to at least get it rolling. issues to resolve- http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/.../blownaxle.jpg http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/...ingcaliper.jpg |
well, if the pans haven't rusted through, you might consider a quart (or gallon) of OSPHO to continue painting the rusted area with until the red stops showing through, then a final coat and put the carpets back in place. Or reinforce with some Bondo . . . LOL. But then I remembered how handy you are with a welding setup!!!!
So, how much $$ is the Butcher's Bill for all the parts that you need? |
