gonna swap the transmission.
Heres the new plan, going to take the known good 4-speed from my 74 240 and swap it in, keep the current one to rebuild at my leisure. The 74 has been sitting dead in the water with a clutch hydraulic failure, and has needed a new clutch forever. Ive been sitting on it for almost a year intending to pull the engine anyway and do a 617 swap, so this might be an opportunity to just yank the whole drivetrain and swipe the gearbox. Only problem is super limited time, if I can get this done after work over the next two days ill be good. Crunch time. :D |

:D Had a crazy night tonight, pics tomorrow. Under 3 hours, 4-speeds removed from both cars, and good one installed in the 83. Maybe 20 minutes of work to adjust rods and test drive tomorrow before work. |

Or are you going to add to the BW thread of pictures of W123s with girls? |

Here are some pics of the swap- This is the 115. This was parked about 10 miles away, had a dead battery, and a completely dry clutch system. Took about two hours to get it to the work space. Clutch had to be pumped up, and battery charged. Turns out that the hydraulic problem was a blown slave cylinder. Took longer to move this car than to pull both transmissions once they were both here! :D http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/...40D/115240.jpg Here is from underneath after pull the gearbox. It is a little different than the original iron 4 speed I was using, had different side arms, and a different reverse lever. I moved over the specific linkage bars as well. Debating the shifter, the 115 shifter has a super long throw arm for reverse or 1-2. (EDIT- Nope, they are identical, pulled and compared, just looked longer since it was worn out) may be necessary to get a full throw into gear. Unfortunately, it is very very sloppy, so needs to be rebuilt. Hopefully this does not present a problem. At least I KNOW this gearbox is good, just in case shifting becomes an issue. http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/...40transout.jpg Pics of the part numbers- Replacement gearbox- http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/...artnumber2.jpg One I originally put in- http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/...artnumber1.jpg here they are together- http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/.../bothboxes.jpg Gonna do the shift rods at lunch, the replacement gearbox is otherwise fully installed. |

Ok, gonna own up to some serious boneheadedness going on here. This is in the interests of public service for others who might be inclined to boneheadedness. :D
So the entire evening of frenetic activity last night was unnecessary. Some good came of it, but on the whole, was unnecessary. Here is the reason 3rd was popping out- http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/...40/shifter.jpg A shift linkage bind, as I originally thought, but after checking and readjusting 3 times, I apparently missed this blatant bind every time. Look from all angles, I think I was looking from the wrong side, but its no excuse. So basically, it took the installation of an entire new transmission to realize that the issue was 2 minutes of tweaking the shift rod for 3-4. :D Fortunately, I only wasted one evening, about 5 hours. HOWEVER, some good did come of this, I had installed this shift fork- http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/...shiftfork1.jpg Which had been damaged somehow in the bell of wherever that other transmission came from. I had welded up the cuts and it didn't look bent, but it definitely was bent. When I had an opportunity to take a look at the good shift fork from the 115, this one was way out of whack, creating a situation where the clutch would engage right off the floor, instead of in the more normal benz diesel location. I feel much better having inadvertently replaced that though idiocy. Shifts like a dream now. |

Nice car - but look at how much work space you've got there - wow I'm EN - VI - OUS
|
its a 3500 sqf commercial space I initially rented with a couple other people, but have now almost completely taken over. Floor space has been good, but the building should be condemned. Im actually moving out pretty soon, have a 1300 sqf place thats brand new and can be arranged better.

More pics- bad front caliper and new front caliper (was leaking on the inboard piston side)- http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/...40/brakes1.jpg http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/...240/brakes.jpg fuel line replaced. (what a mess this was to deal with, I put the boot on after making sure it wasn't leaking) http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/.../fuelline2.jpg http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/...0/fuelline.jpg and the new diff mount. The fuel leak really killed this mount. Car definitely sits higher after replacing it. http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/...diffmounts.jpg Its being bought back tomorrow. |
Wow. Nice work!
Sincerely, PE |
