It broke? How did it break?

I have a 2:88. But it is in my storage unit and I don't have the energy to look for it. You should be able to find one out there somewhere. 85's only is the tough part. Get on one of those nationwide parts locators or post an add here in the forum. You will probably find one pretty quick. The closer, the better. Shipping gets expensive on something that heavy. It is amazing how heavy it is for being so small.

car-part. com is your friend. Just punch in 1985 300D, or 300SD. (The SD diff will fit, but it will have an ABS sensor FYI)

this is how I found one for myself a couple years ago, moved an 85 SD rear end into my 83 300D

I hope the OP comes back. I would be all over this if I was in CA.

you are going to put a 67HP diesel 4 cylinder engine into a 4700lb van? what was the original motor? 4.3or 2.8? if the 4.3, you better source a 4:11 rear diff...

by the way,it broke because some fool installed a 4=speed "to get better mileage"...
I put the automatic back in, and sold it. then a year later it messed up so now I'm helping the new owner out...

A manual transmission would not damage the diff, how are you determining that? Chances are the diff is old and worn as you said, or had a period of bad lubrication and its simply time to replace it.

Plus, you removed the manual, and its been driving around for a year with an auto, yet its "broken" because of the manual swap? that does not make sense

Apart from ratios, the diffs are not built differently for manual or automatic applications in these older diesel benzes. Unless the person who swapped in the manual spent 95% of his time dropping the clutch and smoking the tires with his cast iron diesel (doubtful ) the diff would not be adversely affected either way.
I had a 2.88 behind a 4-speed for years, and towed all the time with it, and drove it hard. I had replaced a worn out 3.07 behind the auto.

I have a 2.88 already pulled and ready to go here in NC. Shipping might be expensive though. Let me know if you are interested.
Thanks,
Shane

I guess you're right, the diff gets way more banging up with the typical MB automatic hahaha my god, the way most of them shift, how does that drive train even last past the warranty period!?
