Battery Cold Cranking Amps?

I'm checking into buying a new battery, as my existing one in the 240d is about 4 years old. As a result of the age it seems to crank pretty slow on real cold days. (-15 C & colder) The battery is fully charged - just old.

The most powerful battery I can buy locally (that will fit - group 49 type) has 750 cold cranking amps. Will this be powerful enough to get the old 82 240d up and running after it has been sitting at my work all day? Does anyone know what CCA Mercedes recommends?

Thanks

Aivars

750 sounds a little weak. I put a 950 in my 240 with good results.

The one in my car is rated at only 550 cca. It came with the car (1980 300cd)and I have never had a problem even on 20 degree nights. I will get the recomended one when I need a new one. andy

Andy,
Do you mean that your battery is 22 years old? That is truly amazing if it is true.

Thanks for your replies. I was able to find another source for where I managed to buy a 950 cca battery. Hopefully this will give me all sorts of starting power to spare !!

P.E.H, No, My battery is not 22 years old. It's about 3. The original battery died and took half the battery tray and a hole in the inner fender with it some time ago. I've only had the car about 2 and a half years. andy

If your battery is fine, don't waste money getting a new one. A thin winter oil ( I use 0W30) will give much better results then a battery with a high CCA rating. My '82 300D Turbo starts hard at mild negative temps like -5 C using 15W40 but fires right up at even -25 C with 0W30 motor oil. Someone posted that a W123 starter draws 950 amps, I seriously doubt this since my 750CCA battery starts the car every time.
