Welcome to the forum. And WOW what a beautiful car. I love that color.

I have been running Dextron ATF in my manual trans 78 240D and it shifts smooth at butter. I had Redline MTL in it for a little while, but I started getting grinding when downshifting even when doing it very gently. Drained the fluid and sprayed it down with brake cleaner, let it sit and dry for a good while. Then filled with ATF. Grinding went away and the shifts have been smooth ever since. And it's got 319k miles on it.

At 75 I hope your engine's screaming, that's nearing top speed for that poor ol' girl. Mine cruises best 60 to 63.

I use syntheric ATF in the transmission. tried to use synthetic 80w 90, and was too thick. thought with over 300K it would help with all the miles. now with the ATF it shifts smooth. do have a little grind when up shifting into 2nd. might be worn synchros. but if I go easy, it goes in pretty smooth.

John mentioned if you have the plastic coated wheel cover clips or steel. the plastic ones are if you have the light allow wheels. if you have the broken silver stripe around the center of the wheel, then it is the Light Alloy, or aluminum. the plastic keeps the clip from digging in, and gouging the aluminum.

Nice looking car, like the color. looks like the headlight door is broken. new those are pricy, sometimes can find decent ones in the yards.

I've definitely got the steel hubcaps/wheels, they're crazy heavy for 14x5.5 or whatever they are.

Great advice so far, much appreciated.

Hi there,

I clicked the link (as my seals are also cracked) and looked through the catalog. I even did a search for "seals" and I didn't find seals that fit between the window and outer door. (see photo).

Where do you guys get them?

Thanks

Hey-

Nice find! You'll love it. I have my 3rd and 4th 240d at present. One is a daily driver the other was bought as a parts car but may become more. If you stay on top of the maintenance, you'll be very happy and the car will take great care of you.

I see you have a Virginia inspection. Where are you located? I'm in Richmond.

Hope you enjoy the car!

Phil.

I'm a MD resident but I bought the car in VA from a private owner.

I work in NoVA though, Tysons Corner.
