Questions about BELTS... ??
I am replacing an alternator on my 240D 1977 and am also replacing the belts while I have them off. I am not knowledgable about belts and have a couple general questions..
1. does how the underside looks(the side that touches the pulley) always look the same? here is a pic of my old belt and the new one i got at the local parts store, both the new power steering and alternator belts have different bottom "teeth" configurations,, the power steering belt is solid with no teeth, but the old one has teeth... the alternator new belt has smaller teeth than the old one does this matter? or just differences in brands? 2. how critical are sizes?? the manual seems to say this 616 for alternator spec is 9.5x970 the old belt on there is 10x970 the new one the shop gave me is 11x965 should i try to get a belt that is closer to spec, or should this 11x965 work?

Those belts are fine for now, i personally would have ordered new conti-tech belts only because they last much longer, and stretch very little over time.
I used a drive-rite(dayco) belt once in a pinch on my 280CE's alternator/water pump, that silly thing needed to be tighten back up constantly so i pulled it off and stuck a conti-tech on it, havent adjusted it since.

The teeth, ribs. nubs etc are different depending on the brand. don`t think it makes much difference. what is important is how the belt fits in the pullys.
I looked up your 77 240D, and here is the info on belts listed on this site. shows you the propper size etc... 1977 Mercedes-Benz 240D Sedan - Engine Miscellaneous - Page 1 Charlie

For V belts, the contact patch is on the each side of the " V " , as the belt wears it rides lower in the V of the pulley. If the sides of the belt wear enough so the bottom contacts the bottom of the V, it won't transmit as much power and will slip.
The " teeth " allow the belt to wrap around pulleys easier increasing service life. Not all makers use the same profile and some put teeth on the top. Unless we tested every belt there is no way to tell what profile is "better". As for sizes 9, 9.5 and 11 are the top width in MM. A wider top width will make the belt ride higher in the groove. The 965 and 970 are the Outer Circle / Circumference ( OC ) in MM. For the alt, where was the adjuster in it's travel? The 11 x 965 will ride higher in the groove making it appear shorter than a 9 x 965 and being the 965 is shorter than 970 the adjuster travel will be less. Adjuster travel should be in the 25% to 75 % range, below 25% and the belt may be difficult to install but still will work fine, over 75% and there is limited adjustment left. Also, when running at either limit, check for interference with other belts / pulleys. I don't have any data as to what belt is correct. Test fitting belts while keeping them clean is acceptable but, running the engine then returning isn't. |

what everyone here is trying to say is, the grooves in the pulleys on the Mercedes Imported Metric vehicle are metric sized. installing a 9.5mm belt in place of a 10mm belt is not a wise move. the reason it's 9.5 instead of 10mm is that it's actually a 3/8" belt. and it's NOT the correct size. a belt is supposed to sit at the top of the pulley groove. having it a little shorter in total length, but thinner may make it tight, but it will not turn the accessory the correct RPM, and it'll wear faster, needing to be replaced or re-tensioned more often.
do yourself a favor. go to an import automotive local store, if you need belts today, or call the number at the top of this page, and order a correct set for your car. and don't worry about your belts again for the next 10 years.
