A "Huh?" moment with state inspection 1995 E300D

I bought Tyler's 95 E300D last week and drove it home from Kansas without issue. I took it to a shop that I trust in the area for a state inspection prior to having it registered in Maryland. (So if it fails I'm still allowed to drive it until I register it)

The report came back that it has play in one of the drag link ball joints, a leak around the fuel filter and play in what they called the driveshaft bushing... oh and I forgot to reconnect the EGR valve.

I got clarification on the "driveshaft bushing play" to mean that they took the driveshaft and applied torque by hand. They said that the driveshaft appeared to move before the yoke of the transmission moved. I explained that the guibo (they never heard that word or "flexdisc" before) is constructed in a way that it won't really allow torsional play unless it's failing.

So they inspected it further and said it doesn't have any cracks or fraying on any surface they could see. I haven't noticed any noise or clunking when driving the car and I haven't been able to get under the car to do an inspection myself (yes, I know... )

Anybody have a clue as to what they could be describing and how it happens?

There is a center "carrier bearing" in the propeller shaft that has a bushing around it; perhaps that is what they are referring to?

I don't believe it!! You actually were able to move past the OM617 and join us in 6 cylinder territory. One Of Us... One Of Us... One Of Us...

If they are referring to the center support, movement there is normal as the bearing is encased in the rubber flex housing. I would look the center support over to be safe and check for cracking as you move the shaft causing the rubber to pinch a bit in spots thus showing any cracks if they exist. Like pull down hard on the shaft, and check the bottom portion of the rubber for fatigue for example.

Congrats on the new acquisition!

Hey! That's not true. I've always liked Straight 6s, but the thing is that no matter how far or fast you run the OM617 will always pass you sooner or later.

I thought there were, but from what it sounded like the movement they were describing existed within the guibo itself. I'll be under the car this Saturday, but to satify my curiosity is the center support near the transmission or is it basically in the same place it is on the w123?

And thanks... it was a fun drive back. My wife loves it. But that means I get the w123s more to myself!

The center carrier has a bearing encased in a rubber mount. The rubber mount failed (at 240,000 mi) on my SD. I posted pages from the FSM for someone else & we can't upload the same thing twice. I don't know difference between the 85 and your 95 but the system sounds similar.

The only things out of the ordinary to know in the event you have to remove it is:
Flex disks stay with the shaft. Mark the halves of the shaft so you can reinstall them the same. There are factory marks on the shafts in case yours get removed.

Oh there are mountains out west. You just have to drive farther to reach them. For sea food they do have "Rocky Mountain Oysters".

I drove through Kansas this Christmas time. To me, it looked like the state tree was post rock. Or is that the state shrub?

Regards,
Tom
