Angry OMG the land_yacht failed inspection

My 300sd just failed inspection because, get this...it has a exhaust leak so bad that it sounds like a diesel. I kid you not. I tried to argue with the dude, but I could see the oh$hit look on his face when he realized he was wrong, but he wouldn't have it.

And she does NOT have a exhaust leak.

I have a similar experience up here- where I have to PROVE the diesels are diesels every two years to do the registration.

It always goes like this- I pull up with the car running (either diesel).
Klatta, klatta, klatta, klatta...
They walk up- "license and insurance!" I hand it to them. No point in trying to tell them it's a diesel- they don't listen to anything you have to say at this point.

Klatta, klatta, klatta, klatta...
"What year is the vehicle?"
Klatta, klatta, klatta, klatta...
"Mercedes?" Yes.
Klatta, klatta, klatta, klatta...
They walk around the vehicle with a mirror on the end of a broomhandle.
Klatta, klatta, klatta, klatta...
Then they get this weird look on their faces, and walk back to my window..
Klatta, klatta, klatta, klatta...
"Is this THING a diesel?" Yes it is.
Klatta, klatta, klatta, klatta...
"Did you make it a diesel?" Nope, it came from Germany that way.
Klatta, klatta, klatta, klatta...

Then they get this pissed off, disgusted look on their faces, say nothing, and go stomping into the little office- and say something to someone, point out the window at my car, and come back with a little green paper indicating "exempt." Klatta, klatta, klatta, klatta...

God how they hate that.

Wow, I would be more than a little pissed off about this type of idiocy. Its not like the word 'diesel" isn't written on the back of these cars for the most part even if you are deaf and stupid. Do you have to take it back to the same place for a reinspection? Can you call the owner?

Locally inspections for diesels are done at diesel specific inspection facilities by appointment, so I never run into this problem. Guyi usually take diesels too loves the old models and loves to hear back stories

So...you don't have an exhaust leak. What did they fail you on?

Exhaust leak which I don't have.
Power steering leak which I don't have as of earlier this week. I told the dude I changed the leaky pump a few days ago but he said it looked like it was leaking to him. (i didn't clean the engine bay after I changed it.) I'll wash the bay.
Bad brakes. This one I can correct by plugging all the vac lines except for the one going to the booster.

Id let them now its a diesel before you open the door of the car ,Ive had my usually station do the inspections on mine and its like back in the early 80s ,in and out in 10 minutes. My first little check is wipers ,tires and brakes ,after that theirs very little to cause a failed sticker.

The Government workers ahhhh errr I mean these people that hold positions of employment in a government agency, have no brain. seems like they got some of them at the corner light with their card board sign begging for what ever their sad tale is.

The get this power trip that they can hold it over you, and there is nothing you can do about it. most have no common sense

Calif is full of fruits, nuts and every left wing nut job and tree hugger, but at least we don` have to have these yearly inspections and a sticker on the windshield. Diesels 97 and older have to be checked of opacity and the older one`s don`t have to be looked at. and that is amazing in it`s self.

But we do have to bend over ea year paying the Registration. goes up each year.

Gassers have to be smogged every 2 yrs, but still no vehicle inspection as far as I know.

I worked for State Gov. for 37 yrs, so know some of the stupidity that goes on.

PA reg-$38 a year. Inspection-$23.

How bad are your reg fees?

Here they only test diesels for opacity, and I'm pretty sure it's only older than 2002 for all vehicles. The last guy who did the emissions on my car was happy to do it. Even though the insurance agent who did the registration put the fuel type as gas accidentally... fortunately that didn't come back to bite me. The inspector told me that he's only ever seen a couple of diesels fail, EVER.

this is so unnecessary to say stuff like this. what does someones sexuality or political persuasion have to do with diesel motors? and frankly, there are probably far more " left wing nut jobs" running diesels in california than anyone else.

Don't put up with it

I absolutely will not put up with something like that.

If he actually said that, and you were in the right, and him in the wrong, then be nice, but if he doesn't budge, don't let his problem (of being stupid), to become your problem. Go to his supervisor. And someone's paying the supervisor too, so.... keep going up the food chain. Be nice, and say "Look, the car either IS, or IS NOT a diesel. It can't be both. So look at it, and let me know. And it either DOES, or DOES NOT have an exhaust leak, but it can't be both, so....which is it?"

If it has a leak, fine, show me where it is, and I'll have it fixed. But I can't fix a leak that's not there.

you never know what youre going to get at inspection time. My 420 failed two places once. One for a legitimate exhaust leake and another for a chip in the front headlight. I took it to a seedy part of town without fixing either with a clean bill of health and a new sticker. I thought it was funny that one guy had this puzzled look on his face when he asked my if my car had windshield wipers. He couldnt see them as the were tucked under the hood.
