HELP!! Possibly locked keys in car!!!

Okay, I went to unlock my car, and I can't find my keys. I always hang them up right after I come inside. However, I cannot find them. I was hoping somebody had an idea about how to unlock the doors without a key. I would really like to know!! I think I may have accidently locked the doors with the keys inside, possibly not, I'm still looking around the house. My Dad might have grabbed them, but he is unavailable. I just moved the car around the yard 3 hours ago!

sleepstar 03-08-2012 09:35 PM

unless you've really done something to your lock, or exited the car through the passenger door, this isn't possible. the driver's door can't lock unless it's closed..meaning it can only be locked from the outside with the key, or with you on the inside

kerry 03-08-2012 09:35 PM

How did you lock the keys in the car. The driver's door requires a key to lock it.

Thirdem 03-08-2012 09:43 PM

I think I used the key, but I think I locked the passenger door with the thing sticking up. I am not too sure, I am still exiting panic-mode. I hope I didn't.

Thirdem 03-08-2012 09:48 PM

FOUND THEM!!! When I had checked my coat pockets, I had missed them!! PHEWW!!! I am officially calmed down. That was a horrible, sinking, disgusted feeling when I reached for the keys, and they weren't hanging up. Thanks!!

Is this your only copy? If it is, it's time to head to the dealer and have a new steel key made.

My wife's keychain has a duplicate of the my 300D's key, and I have one for her 190E. As a final back up, I have a brass duplicate key of my 300D in my wallet (it's thin enough to be unobtrusive).

ah-kay 03-08-2012 10:46 PM

You do NOT has a spare set of key in the house? I would cut a spare one immediately

Fulcrum525 03-08-2012 11:06 PM

I thought it was odd when I read this post. It's actually pretty hard to lock your keys inside the car...

I hate my GFs car because of this. You can lock the door at any time which makes it quite easy to lock them inside.

I always carry a spare key for the mazda in my wallet. I had one made at home depot and I ripped the rubber head off. It wont start the car but it will get me in it. Just yesterday I left my key in the ignition in the run position at work from 2-5pm and when I went to get it in it was locked. I realized I didnt have my key and I pulled out my spare. I then realized I left the key in the ignition and the car didnt start. I had to jump it but it was better than having to get a co worker to take me to my house to get my spare and then all the way back and jump it in the dark.

funola 03-08-2012 11:15 PM

If you did lock the keys in the car. This is how you get in:

You need a coat hanger, a file, a big screw driver, a leather belt.

Bend one end of the coat hanger to a fish hook shape and sharpen with file.

Using the leather belt to protect the trim and paint, pry the corner of the door open just enough to stick the coat hanger in. Bend the coat hanger to shape till you can hook the door knob and yank. Takes me less than a minute.

I have two keys, one unlocks the drivers door and starts the car, the other unlocks the passenger door and starts the car. I have no trunk or glovebox key.:(

They are on the same keychain.

Have you ever taken one of those tests where you put the square pegs in the square holes?

:smash: :D

I have one the key head broke off of, and keep that in my wallet. my biggest fear is having the car locked, then later opening the trunk wih the key and laying the key down in the trunk to do what ever I opened it for. then closing it with the key inside the trunk.

Years ago AAA offered a plastic card the size of a credit card with a key in the center, had it cut for my Datsun. sure has paid off a few times. they no longer have them.

ok... it's odd that one key only opens the driver's door... and the other only opens the passenger's door, but both will start the car...
perhaps the driver's door tumbler has been replaced with a generic one, and the ignition tumbler is damaged to accept any key...

if you take your registration to any mercedes dealer they will cut you a correct vin matched key that fits the trunk, glove box and all the doors along with the ignition.
however, you may have damaged or incorrect tumblers in place on your car.
the dealer can also order correct tumblers for the vehicle.
so first step I'd take is
take owner ship papers to the dealer, and order a master key.
then see what it will NOT open, and order replacement tumblers for those spots.

oh come on tango... he explains why the keys are on the same keychain... yeesh, don't start something.

TnBob 03-09-2012 12:09 PM

Even at his age he has the moxie to ask before reaching for a hammer... cut him a wee bit of slack.

And does that explaination make one bit of sense? Both keys perform the same essential functions. If they are the only two keys available, how does it make any sense at all to keep them together?

The alternative is to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result.

And there are so many Mercedes dealers to choose from in and around North Pole, AK.

He may be young but he has a big EGO and not a lot of common sense. But Tango beat me to it on sarcasm.

I believe the kid has some troubles that are affecting his judgement right now. if all of us avoid intentionally goading him, the forum will be better with his input.

all you "grown ups" need to put yourselves in his shoes. a "big ego" is nothing to be ashamed of. it's the way you use it and interact with others that determine your place in life.

this is DIESEL DISCUSSION. please try to keep all posts on topic, and avoid baiting and other "trollish behavior"

thank you.

you are lucky. my "little brother" has to search for 18's... there are MANY disadvantages to being tall... and at 6'9 he's constantly reminding me of them. He's engaged to a shoe sales girl... lemme know if you need shoes shipped...

Luckily we live in an NBA town... lots of giants around here.

It does not look like that you are not a very good role model. I do not want to talk about shoes. I am getting out as it is getting stuffy here.:)

No, no, no! It was me that diverted him off course. I shouldn't have mentioned shoes. My bad. However, I will try and get a new set of keys that will work on the trunk and glovebox!

Admiral Ahani 03-10-2012 03:03 AM

Also, go to home depot or any hardware store and get a copy of the key that opens the driver door and starts the car. Stick this key in your wallet, for emergencies.

I have done it in my 240D... Granted I was 3 years old at the time but I did lock the keys in the car.

THe threads that dont die.... so now I got to ask the obvious: if you live in NorthPole Alaska (where ever that is) why in hell do you lock your car anyway? I suppose Im bragging, but I dont lock my cars at home ever. This saves on key wear...

Bio300TDTdriver 03-10-2012 04:31 PM

I have a better question: If you live in Alaska or on the VT Canada border, why haven't you installed keyless entry on your cars?;)

Because I don't trust our teenage neighbors, they hit my pickup last winter, and they drove off, causing $500+ damage. At the time I had just got it and the title wasn't in my name yet, so I didn't call the police. The neighbor lady refused to admit it was somebody there, when I watched him leave in a HUGE hurry after he hit it. I had no idea until I went out there only seconds after it was hit, and I couldn't figure out why he was in such a hurry.

Well for one thing I've heard one can misplace them. The keys are fine, but when I used to leave my car parked outside in VT my lock would freeze. Keyless solves that problem.

The first problem I'll leave up to you and your lord. ;)

what good would keyless entry do if you lock the keychain in the car?

I'm such a forgetfull person, I have THREE sets of keys on my person for any car I'm driving... and my door tumblers are difficult to use, so I routinely open the rear door, and lock my driver's door, then shut the rear... and if I have left the key in the car, I gotta dig out a spare from one of my other pockets... or call home and have my FOURTH set of keys brought to me...

I usually have a set in my right jacket pocket, and a set in my left front pants pocket, and another set clipped to my belt loop, and a final set in my dresser at home...

yes. I've had to have someone retrieve my keys from home... because I've left the keys in the car, with it running, and locked them in... at a gas station no less...

:D:D:mad::eek::rolleyes::P

but you know what? I got my car opened without breaking anything.

One remote should probably remain in the house in a location that one could remember.

The fob might make it more difficult to misplace the key in the first place. I have mine on a quick release key chain so I only have the key in the ignition and not 5 lbs. of keys.

JamesDean 03-11-2012 12:34 PM

+1 for Keyless. They're not expensive, I've installed a few that were under $30 and they work perfectly fine. One FOB goes on my keys, the other sits in the basket by the garage door or on keyhooks in the basement.

My drivers door lock on the 190 doesn't lock anything anymore, so I'd been using the trunk luck for a while. That is until winter hit, froze my trunk lock and made it impossible to get in the car.

vtmbz 03-11-2012 12:41 PM

My beagle locked me out of my car once-- twenty miles from home! God bless her hyperactive slobbery little soul.

300D85 03-11-2012 06:02 PM

saw a mech recently getting in a locked door, put like a small deflated rubber bladder thing in the top of the door,

that pumped up quick by a squeeze hand pump,

that then made it easy to get a rod with a hook in the opening

layback40 03-11-2012 10:18 PM

Well guess what I did the other day?? got out of the jeep & as I did, must have bumped the lock doors switch.
It was late so left it till morning.
The spare was in the glove box.
Could see the keys still in the ignition, including the key less entry thing.
After looking at the manual, thought I could put a hook down between the door & window & pull the latch, after 10 minutes gave up on that.
Then tried placing a steel rule up besides the window glass & levering it down. Got it down about 1/8" & put a piece of hard plastic in there to keep it down.
Bent up a piece of fencing wire & hooked the keys & placed them on the seat.
Flipped the key less thing over so the buttons were up.
Using the wire, pressed the unlock button & click, it unlocked.
So easy, more luck than anything!!!

A friend once locked his keys in his 280E at a Rotary meeting, the local locksmith was at the meeting.
The keys were on the seat.
They guy held a flash light shining on the key while the locksmith made a duplicate just by looking at the key.
It worked !!!
