$250 is ridiculous. Are you sure there's not some communication error with the parts place? Google for "86 300SDL engine mount" and you'll find some for $25 or so each. It's best to replace both.
It's important to do it quickly, because as the rubber tears apart, it can dirty the hex bolts and make it harder to get them off. Little grits of rubber stuck inside the hex bolt can make it harder to get a solid attachment and make it easier to strip the bolt. Happened to me and I was forced to drill out the bolt entirely to get my new motor mount on. It's important to clean out the (female) bolt using a drill bit, etc. The motor mounts use female/inverted hex bolts (ie allen bolts) that require special sockets. |

There is a difference between "engine shocks" and "engine mounts". And it's also very easy to confuse them with "suspension shocks", depending on who you talk to or where you look. The "engine mounts" are the big black blocks with a hole on each side that holds the engine onto the chassis. The "engine shocks" are the small piston-like shocks that absorb the vibration/rocking of the engine - the driver's side is behind the cross member, the passenger's side is in front of the cross member.
Engine mounts: You may also want to inspect your transmission mount, which is on the rear of the transmission bolted onto the crossmember near the midway point of your vehicle (approximately underneath where your armrest would be). If it's worn out or dry rotted, it's best to just replace all (the 2 engine mounts + tranny mount). |

I know what i need i am a diesel mechanic .this is not an engine mount. My car had the engine mounts replaced recently.this is an engine shock mount. Huge difference. They are anywhere from 220 to 250. It is a metal mount with a rubber insert. One on each side up front the engine shock mounts to it. If anyone knows what i am talking about and has a used one or a good lead on some cheap ones would br much appreciated.

Ouch. Honestly that's baffling. One extra cylinder and then parts prices skyrocket through the roof. It's the same body, but I'm guessing with the extra HP it needs something designed slightly different. I bought my shock kit (with bushings and mount) for probably $100 each side. You might be able to ask a local euro parts place if they can find it for you as the web seems to only have a few places. In the time being, it may help to swap the passenger side onto the driver's side, since the driver's side gets the blunt of the force.

To avoid the 250 price tag. I chucked the castings into a lathe and cleaned out the interior, where the rubber was bonded. This could be done manually. To replace the rubber, I used a hole saw to cut 2 or 3 discs from old tire treads, their thickness varies due to tire thickness. Note the height of the old rubber insert and match the total disc thickness to it. It is difficult cutting holes in a steel belted tire, a sharp hole saw is needed and it will be dull after you've cut your discs. The discs are an interference fit to the castings. I then used acetone to clean discs and casting interior. The discs are coated, edges and top, with Q bond super glue and pressed into the casting, one at a time. These have been on my car for the last 12k and I travel over less than well maintained country roads, potholes separated by pavement ![]() When they, fail I'll spend another 10 bucks on a hole saw and some Q bond and go for another x miles. |

Candide, how was the original rubber held in place? Did it appear to be glued?

I got the shock mount kit for my 300sd for $25 from my local parts shop, Discount Import Parts in Portland. It doesn't include the large metal mount but does include the rubbers. I believe they ship upon request as well.
