Question about 84' 300sd TD

Got #3 questions

1. My gas meter is kind of messing up, when it got to around half a tank left it starts wiggling to empty and back to half etc.. Eventually it just stays behind the E and I don't know how much gas I have. I just filled it to full and now the meter works again. I'm guessing the problem is when it gets under half it starts going haywire.

2. My hood release broke today, I can still get the cable with pliers but I don't want to do that unless I need to. Anyone have any suggestions where online I should buy another part and should I replace the whole cable or just try to reinstall the handle on to the cables.

3. Happens rarely but I'm wondering why, when im driving around the city very rarely when I'm getting to a red light I let go of the gas and the car just shuts off, the steering get's very hard of course and I just stop the car put it in park let it cool down for about 5-10 seconds then just start it up and it works perfect again. It happens rarely but it's something that I would like to fix. Thank you.

If you are putting gas in your SD there is the first problem.

Well there ya go. You may need a new sending unit.

Diesels are simple. They just need fuel.
Clean filters?
Good fresh hoses?
Tank screen clean?
Air getting into the system?

Need more info to help more.

So simple I am even starting to get the hang of them! lol. Seriously the only major mechanical thing I ever did was to rebuild mt 650 Triumph Tiger in hgh school. Beyond that i just performed normal maintenance on various vehicles since then. Thanks to the wealth of information found on sites like this I am able to maintain my 300SD!

How do you know the filters are clean? Can you see inside? (sarcasm intended).
I just replaced filters on my 300SD twice only to find there was a mess in my tank. The screen totally clogged.

As I was chasing a power loss issue, I'd pop the hood and pull the prefilter. When I would do so, there was a sucking sound when removing the hose. This is unusual and an indication of a major restriction.

Lots of info on removing the tank screen. I pulled the entire tank to clean it properly.

I changed the filters last weekend. Im definitley going to remove the tank screen and clean it sounds like a familiar problem.

cleaning the sender seems to be a hot topic lately:

W123 300D Fuel tank sender question

Careful of the wires on disassembly. They're what makes it work.

Just to avoid misunderstandings. 'TD' refers to a wagon and not to a turbodiesel when it comes to MB nomenclature.
