Possible 116 300SD
I'm investigating a 116 series 300SD. The only part of this car that is completely unknown to me is the turbo as I've never owned nor even driven one before. Is there anything specific to the turbo itself that I should be looking for as a warning sign? Something that when looking under the hood or driving would jump out at you and say "run away from this one?" I'm well versed in the other aspects of the 116 so it's just the turbo issue I'd like some input on.
- Peter.

Nope, the turbo's are a pretty robust part of these cars. The drain seals (large diameter metal pipe exiting the bottom of the turbo) are a common failure, but a fairly easy fix. There not really any part of it that would cause me not to buy a car, unless it was chugging black smoke and clearly not boosting.

Turbos are pretty easy to rebuild, so even if it was not working or working badly, I would not let that queer the deal. Make price adjustments, though

What does it mean to 'queer the deal'?
When you drive it you should feel the boost at around 23-2600rpms if you get on the accelerator. Turbo is not a worry. What year is it? Early 116's had a double diaphragm vacuum pump. It's a good pump but rebuilt kits are much pricier. The one thing you need to investigate closely is the evil servo. No servo, no heat or AC and they're pricey to replace.

It's an antique expression from the UK that is a derivative of the expression "queer the pitch" used in soccer and, I think, cricket. Has nothing to do with sexual orientation or lifestyle.
I can't think of a direct equivalent in north american lingo. It simply means something being introduced to the circumstances that messes up, or changes the parameters of, the deal.

Thank's for the input folks.
Kerry, I'm not concerned about heat, I live in Phoenix. AC is the only concern I have. I assume of course that it's not working and that a complete rebuild of the HVAC system is in order. This based upon my experiences with older Mercedes and the experience of the forum. But irritating though that is it's an inconvenience item rather than a show stopper as some major mechanical thing might be which is why I'm inquiring about the turbo. Looks that that might not be all that much of a problem after all. We'll see... - Peter.

By the way it's a 78.

78's are pre-EGR and most seem to have a manual fast idle knob. I would consider both desirable features in a diesel 116.
Good luck!

Servo is required for functional AC also I believe.

I believe the 78 has a bit less HP than the 80 version and up on 300SD and other turbo 617s.
The point about the heat is that the servo units are known to have a mind of their own. If the heat isn't working properly the ac won't either. They are beautiful cars. I love the 116 body style. Perhaps one of my favorite sedan styles.

I know. I assume that anything to do with HVAC will be shot and require a complete and expensive and time consuming and frustrating rebuild. I'm under no illusions as to the reality.

Thanks for the input folks. Turned out the car was no good. Body was straight but the interior was literally trashed, there was only half an exhaust and they couldn't get it to start.
