1985 300CD Automatic - broken fan in transmission?

From a previous thread, I had purchased a 1985 300CD from Florida and driven it to Virginia. It drove fine. I didn't have time to fix all of the stuff required to pass VA inspection so I had a MB dealer do it (not a good idea I've learned). When I went to pick up the car the first time (after it had passed inspection) one of the headlights was still out. I told them this and they kept the car another day to fix it. When I went to pick up the car the second time, it wouldn't engage in D, S, or L. R was fine. The dealer checked it and couldn't figure out the issue. They changed the transmission fluid to see if that would help to no avail.

I had another mechanic at a different shop look at it. Originally I thought it was a B2 piston issue. The mechanic says that the "fan" is broken in my transmission. I have never heard of a transmission having a fan. Can someone explain to me what this is? thanks.

V/r,
Kurt

That explanation would need to come from the source. Please share it when you get it.

I think the Transmission Fan directly controls the brake light fluid level and may be responsible for the gapping of the spark plugs on the om617...

If its leaking fluid at the b2 piston location ,its the b2 piston .The part will cost you $150 . times two then labor of maybe 3 hrs .$$580 to $650 max .Plus a trannie filter and fluid change ,another $180.Look through your yellow pages and look for foriegn car repair places that will work on the 617 MB car and its trannie ,then look to see if they have a good bbb rating,if that all checks out ask if their familiar with the spacifics of the 300 cd trannie issue ,bring up the b2 piston and its repair ,if that matches what youve been told here at peachparts of how the trans is fixed I cant see how you could go wrong.

Well as far as I know, some heavy equipment such as tractors, do have transmission fans. But that is neither here nor there.

Your Mercedes does not have one.

Who or what is this shop and how did you come to choose it?

Did you look for a recommended shop on here? Looks like the second shop is not much better than a dealer with a diagnosis like that.

I'm in Charlottesville, VA

Thanks everyone for the help. Although I'm in a pickle with this, I still find your help very insightful (as well as some of it being amusing, too!).

Where would I find the list of recommended shops on the peachparts website. I didn't know there was a list. I appreciate this forum and the folks on here very much! Thanks.

V/r,
Kurt

Did the shop say " Your transmission has a bad fan. " or " The turbine in the transmission torque converter is bad, it is like a fan. "

A failed torque converter would not be consistent with normal operation in Reverse.

Well I'll join in out there on the limb, for my own enjoyment as well as others', and ask: does the gentleman you spoke to perchance have a foreign accent?

I am sure my Romanian wrench could make "band" sound like "fan" without too much effort....
