Governor for a 601
We lost our electrical power here on the farm several times this past winter for long stretches (30 hours one time). This can create serious issues when temps are at or below zero, which is not uncommon here in the North Country. We have a 6.5K gasoline fired Honda generator but with the short shelf life of gasoline these days (and the 40 mile round trip to the nearest place with gas pumps) it is a serious hassle every time we need to fire up the genset. I had decided that we needed a diesel generator and was planning on getting one before another winter.
A reasonably decent 6K unit will set one back $7-$10 grand and 6 kilowatts works but is really inadequate; enough to get by, but just barely. Then I got to thinking; I have a sweet running '85 190D that a neighbor has been using for the past couple of years that is beginning to have some serious undercarriage cancer. A very lightly used 15K-20K continuous duty PTO tractor powered unit (1800 rpm) can be had locally for $1000-$1500. So the thinking is: Pull the engine on the 190D, fabricate a carriage to mount it on and direct couple to a 15K PTO unit and play with the gearing to have the engine run at a comfortable, fuel sipping 1200rpm. End result would be electricity to burn for minimum cost. All easy enough to accomplish, but I will need a governor for the 601. Anyone out there have any leads or ideas as to what engine might have a governor setup that would bolt up? Thanks, Jim
