oil in manifolds? 1983 300D turbo
I was discusiing rebuilding my turbo with a buddy and he asked why. "I have oil coming out from the gaskets on my intake manifold", I replied. He made the argument that oil in the manifold was normal with moderate blowby, and I should just replace the manifold gasket to keep the spots of the drive. Whats the opinion of you guys out there..

Oil is a normal thing in the intake manifold, your friend is right about coming from Blow By which is a normal thing, and does increase some with wear of the engine.
Try tightening the 17mm bolts that hold the manifolds on. or you could replace it. It is one gasket and about $10. What engine do you have and milage? Charlie

Is the EGR still hooked up? whether it is or not, you will be shocked by the gunk inside the intake manifold. a mixture of oil and soot.

Do not tighten the Manifold Nuts too much. Where the Manifold Studs screw into they Cylinder Head there is only about 4 solid threads that hold it into the Cylinder Head.
I have a Fair amount of Blow-by and when I had the Manifold off it was Oily but there was no Oil pooled inside of it. Also in my case the hole for the EGR was entirly plugged with Carbon.

The egr is disconnected, but still in place. I am currently disassembling car to paint. Would an egr block be worth the effort when I start putting things back together in the engine bay?

Check and see if the egr valve is in the closed position by applying vacuum at the fitting. You should see the diaphram move through the little hole. If the valve is working and normally closed (without vacuum) then installing a blocking kit really only makes for a cleaner looking engine and won't change anything.
