300 turbo diesel compatible with 300CD transmission?
Hi Folks
I have a 84 300TD with a bad transmission. I have offered to me for reasonable price an 81 300CD (non turbo) trans with low miles. My question is : (As far as I can tell the engines are same)... Is it ok to drop in this trans from the 300CD or is there difference in the transmissions for turbo and non turbo? Any help on this is much appreciated. I am on the island of Kauai, in Hawaii, no dealer here, no one really that knowledgeable of MB here ... just a few mechanic friends and me scratching our heads... thanks ![]() |

They are not the same on the inside, although they are both of the same type (722.3). Physically it will fit, but there might be problems getting it to shift right.
The 1981 300CD uses vacuum-only to control the transmission, whereby it uses both the switchover valve and the VCV. The 1984 uses bowden wire and vacuum (VCV only). You can use the 1984 switchover valve (which is only used for the EGR) to work for the transmission. |

The non turbo trans has slightly smaller diameter trans cooler lines & the banjo bolts on the trans are smaller. You may find the NSS has a different plug configuration as well.
You could say the differences are basically cosmetic. The turbo & non turbo motors look the same but are very different internally.

I was not correct.
The 1981-300CD is a 722.118 transmission, the 1984-300TD has a 722.315 transmission. Automatic transmissions are particular to an engine. The turbodiesel also had the 722.120 transmission, that has higher modulation and working pressure from the 722.118 transmission. |
