Diesel will be back in the US!!!

I dont know if this has been posted, because I do not look in the Diesel area very much. I just noticed that this is the most popular section on Mercedesshop WOW, good thing the deisel is comming back to our shores.
For all you diesel fans I just read that Mercedes will be bring back the deisel. If the new E270 (211) is popular you can expect more diesel modles to join, how about a E400 that would be awsome.

I agree, from what I heard, the only new Es we are going to get for 2003 are gonna be the E320 and E500 (thought it won't be as exclusive as the w124 model). No diesel of mention, though Europe as two, a 200 and 270... Must be nice. I heard we won't see diesels till our fuel and air restrictions are up to snuff.

I read from what I thought was a reputable place, but who knows anymore, that we may get the E270 CDI for '04, not '03 as that letter suggested. So many different stories, who knows, but '04 seems more likely to me, maybe even '06, when the new regulations take place to improve diesel fuel.

Yes, there is a S320 CDI. It has a I-6 diesel engine that is also used in the E320 CDI. I heard that the one coming to the US might be the E320 CDI. 0 - 60 is in the 7.8 s range (for the E and about the same as the gas E320) and hwy mileage is about 40 MPG.

Here are the specs for the S320 CDI.

Performance
0-62.5 mph: 8.5 seconds
Maximum speed: 141 mph

Engine
Number of cylinders: 6
Arrangement: in-line
Maximum torque (Nm/rpm): 470 / 1800-2800 rpm

Fuel consumption (mpg) (automatic)
City: 24.8
Extra urban: 47.1
Combined: 35.3

Note, these are UK gallons.

After going 141 I wouldn't want to crawl back in the 350. Have not gone that fast since the '89 Taurus SHO.

There is room for improvement because the E320 CDI has a top speed of 144!

I read some months ago that the diesel engine may be
considered for suv vehicles as a way to beat the
gas mileage rules. The article also described the new diesels as being alot cleaner and quieter.

It is all politics of course.

But, if Diesel engines start into the SUV market, then
hopefully Mercedes will come back on it in the U.S.

Here in Belgium (our capitol is Brussels, also the capitol of Europe) and so I think in the entire European continent, there is also an S400cdi and an S400cdi L (long (wheelbase) version), both equipped with 2 turbo's... here are some specs taken of the Belgian Benz site:

S 400 CDI - S 400 CDI L
3996cc V8, 4 valves per cylinder
Bore x stroke (mm) 86.0 x 86.0

Max. Power (kW/Pk/t. min) 184/250@4.000
Max. torque (Nm/t. min) 560@1.700-2.600
Compressionratio (:1) 18.5
Acceleration 0-100 km/u (sec.) 7.8
V-Max (electronically limited) (km/u) 250

diesel consumption (l/100 km):
City (ZAS) 14.2
EUDC (ZAS) 7.0
Average (ZAS) 9.6
Tank capacity (l) 88

Rearwheel driven

Empty weight (kg) 1970/1995
Max. allowed weight (kg) 2455/2460
Max weight of a trailer or whatever being pulled (with brakes) 2100 kg
Max weight of a trailer or whatever being pulled (without brakes) 750 kg

Trunk (luggage) capacity (l) 500
CO2-emission (g/km) 253

I hope this answers your question.

WOW, that is quite a diesel!

I went to the MB UK site and it did not list this killer MB. It only has the S320 CDI.

Thanks.

If you want proof: go to www.mercedes.com, choose world-wide english (almost on top of page), passenger cars (left), saloons (left), s-class (left), technical data (left), the red/orange arrow next to S 400 CDI (on top)

Here you go!

Please post if you drooled..

The word "quite" is a little understatement for the fastest diesel commercially available in Europe... (I think maybe the entire world)

Aren't your cars in America speed limited? I've only been in the States one time, the cab driver was driving really slow to my standards and when I asked him why he drove like a granny on valium, he said that all cars were limited to a maximum velocity (thought 110 or 120 km/h or so)... or is this only in some states?
