high altitude loss of power

Hey Guys,
Have a question about high altitude, I took my 83 sd up to the white mountains last weekend, the altitude is around 6300ft. When I start the car at that altitude it feels like it is choking for air. After it starts and I start to move it feels like I am in my buddies 240d.

The question is how does the fuel injection compensate for air to fuel mixture compared to todays fuel injection. I know my volvo has a wire that cools and that tells the computer how to adjust the mixture. thanks in advance.
