Tiny oil cooler on 240D (with photo)

Hey folks,

I'm pretty certain this is the original oil cooler on the '77 240D.

My question is this: Are there any larger coolers available for this car, and if so, would they keep the engine temps any lower in the summer?

Thanks in advance.

That's the one. The later 240Ds had a different style that IMO, was not an improvement but probably cost less to manufacture.

The 300D turbo cooler will fit the hole and work better, but the lines will need adapting. I really doubt that it will make enough difference to bother with.

Your picture looks like a miniture of the larger 300D cooler, excpet that the 300 has one line in the top and one in the bottom.

The 80 240D is a bare aluminum cooler of a lighter thin finned design.
also has 2 curved tubes at the top. the 82 240 also uses this type.

I agree probably wouldn`t make a big difference in cooling, but couldn`t hurt adding the 300 cooler. there is the thermostat in the oil filter housing assembly to control the oil flow.

Getting the hoses undone and back on the new cooler would possibly cause enough grief to make you wish you hadn't thought of this plus as already mentioned, it wont make much, if any difference. Is your car running hot?

That's the same one I have on my '79 240D. I think 1979 was the last year they had that style. I may have an extra if you need one, PM me.

Thanks Kurt,

But mine still works just fine. I'm just trying to keep the old OM616 as cool as possible here in the desert heat.

If you do change to the larger cooler, get the hoses that go with it, they are a differant thread size. Thought I was putting in a larger one today on mine.....from an 83 240 but no differant hoses. So back to the junkyard for the right hoses.

I've added a turbo so want a bit more cooling for the oil.

For some reason the Euro 240Ds dont have oil coolers, I suspect because they are really not needed, I dont know if the 240Ds that were exported to the middle east got them, I dont think so . I have never had any problems in the central Ca summer heat with either of my Euro 240Ds. As far as I'm concerned its one less thing to go wrong. It would be interesting to know if oil coolers went to other countries besides the US, on 240Ds.

Are the connections on the oil filter housing blocked off? I'm curious since I have never come across one.

The oil filter housing is the same casting for both except there is no threaded opening for the hoses on the Euro housing.

From June 1978 the OM616 only had an oil cooler if it had airco. Before June 1978 it was standard. Euro 240Ds rarely had airco, hence no oil cooler.

The oil cooler only works if the oil temperature rises above 95ºC. It only works in extreme conditions (when the coolant doesn't keep the temperature down). At 95ºC the normal thermostat is fully open.

The smaller oil cooler was standard from February 1979 on the OM616 (with airco).

Arco is air conditioning? Thanks, so even if a non AC 240D was sent to, say the middle east, it had no oil cooler?
