oil filter shaft seals.

I have a 1979 240d. As many of you with 616s know, there are two little rubber o rings on the shaft coming down from the lid of the oil filter housing. However, every time I change the oil the new filter never comes with these new seals. Is there a known brand of filter that comes with these seals, or can someone just tell me the size of these rings so I can score some?

Thanks!

seth

I haven't yet needed to replace my o-rings, but I feel ya.

I have several different oil filters handed down from the PO (Fram, Mann) and a few that I've stocked up on myself and none has the o-ring. Some don't even have the housing o-ring (115).

For when the day comes, I picked up an o-ring set from Harbour Freight on the cheap ($15ish shipped) that other board members recommended.

... HF has the o-ring set on sale for 1.99 at the moment... the a/c set is 3.99

the sizes are 6/10 and 7/11 mm in my opinion... others say that two 6/10 rings are correct. I disagree with that.

The filters do not come with the small O-rings, but they should come with the large filter housing cover O-ring, and some come with the copper crush washers for the oil drain plug.

The MANN filters (non-MB) do come with the crush washers, and one large O-ring for the filter housing. The MB filters come with two large O-rings (perhaps for multiple applications) but no copper crush washer.

I get a bunch of the small O-rings and replace them at every oil change.

Autozone sells a Metric O-ring assortment made by Dorman foraround $8.
Dorman Metric 172 piece O-ring Value Pack #799-450

In it are 24 of the 6mmIDx10mmODx2mmW O-rings that you need for the bottom of the Oil Filter Stem: enough for 12 Oil Filter Changes as you need 2 O-rings each time you change it.
The 10mmIDx17mmODx2.5mm in the kit fits the bottom of the Filter Bolt; you get 24 of those in the kit.

On 617.952s you can substitute a 7mmx11mmx2mm in the upper groove on the Oil Filter Stem instead one of the 6mmx10mmx2mm. If you do that you have enough O-rings for 24 O-ring changes. (This was suggested by another member and I did it and it works.)

One of the O-rings in the kit also fits the lower Filter Bolt.

Certainly, the stand pipe seals don't require replacement at every oil change. Oil filters don't come with new oil cap gaskets, either. Nor dip stick o-rings.

Would that be the o-ring on the lower end of the secondary fuel filter?

Well I had NEVER replaced them, so I just wanted to know, chief. They are hard and useless, at the moment, and it could account for slow oil pressure build. I dont think it would hurt if they were done once a year.

Thanks for your help everyone!
