lovecraft removal
A friend of mine was forced at gun point to buy a 85 300d with a lovecraft installed.
The car runs like **** and he hates it, so I offered to help him tune it up. He's clueless so I think doing a purge and changing all the filters will do wonders, followed by checking the injectors/compression. I know everyone hates lovecraft and I understand why they are junk systems. He has not been running VO... only diesel. If he only intends to run diesel, should we bother removing the Lovecraft? If it were as simple as bypassing the lovecraft filter I would do it, but the stock filter has been replaced by the coolant heat exchanger quagmire. It seems easier to just put a new, replaceable filter on the lovecraft and just let the heat exchanger do it's thing... yes, insufficient for VO, but it can't hurt just running diesel in the winter, can it? (Unless it leaks) I can't seem to find any good information on lovecraft, except how much it sucks. No diagrams, no info on what filters fit, etc. Anyone know what type of screw on filter we could use? Obviously I can pull the one on there off and see what kinds of threads it uses. Just want some opinions!

Source a used fuel filter housing and just remove all of that crap. I have a 617 fuel filter (spin in) housing for sale if need be.

the housing is there... the lovecraft thing is mounted where the stock fuel filter goes, with coolant lines running all over the place.

The fuel filter assembly is a very simple component, two bolts hold the entire arrangement on. When they retrofit to a lovecraft, they modify a lot of the stock lines, so best bet is just got a junkyard and grab the whole assembly head, along with the stock hard lines, or install new rubber lines in the stock arrangement and put in a regular filter. I have used VO for years with great success, but even I will admit that frickin lovecraft has done more to damage the idea of VO, and sullied the experience of many with their crappy systems than anything. Get rid of it, go back to stock, or modify the car with a good two tank system that actually works long term. If you do a search, you will find numerous threads about removing lovecraft systems, with pics

dropnosky, i don't want a two tank system. In fact, i don't want any VO system. Like I said, my friend only wants to run diesel. ill just compare it to my car and return it to stock configuration... anyone want to buy the lovecraft? I kid!
