Starting to test my partially functional A/C system

Hello,

I have a 1985 300D KaliKar that has what I would call a marginal A/C system. On a cooler day (< 80), if the A/C is turned on you can just tell that drying and a small amount of cooling of the air from the vents are happening.

On my car, with the engine cold, when you start the car and turn the A/C to full, the aux fan does not come on. Is the aux fan supposed to come on whenever the A/C system is on?

This system is still R12.

No. It'll only engage when temperature rises above setpoint. If you are low on refrigerant it wont build heat.

Yes what he said about the fan.

On the dryer there are two switches, one is a pressure switch that sits in the refrigerant line. Normally this switch has spade connections directly on the back of the switch.

The temperature switch is threaded into the casting on top of the dryer and usually has 2 wire leads going to inline spade connectors. If you unplug the switch from the harness and short the harness side connectors together with a small piece of wire (be careful, this is a hot-side switch so don't let your jumper touch the frame, or ground the connections, or you will blow a fuse) the aux fan should start.
