Custom air intake?
 

i went to autozone and got a 90 degree 3 inch elbow (10$). Along with a spectre cone air filter (26$) and a 3 to 2.5 inch coupler (8$) and i was wondering what do i do with the breather system fot the ccv and valve cover vent.

Is there a cheap way around it that still works and looks good. I took a spare original air cleaner set up and pulled the vapor separator out and used the original hose that came from the valve cover and stuck the stem of the seperator in the the ccv.
Any one else done this or have a better idea?

yeah I cut out the oil seperator and used it.It made the motor look bad so I vent mine with a hose to the ground.I don't use oil so it works fine.

It sould be easy to drill a Hole in the Steel Tube and Tap it for pipe threads to mount a Nippple for the Breather Hose. There won't be many Theads but a little JB Weld on the Nipple Threads ought to hold it in.

This is what I did on mine, of course you can find something better to use as a Breather than I did. I wanted to get the job finished so I used the cookie Can.
I got the washabel Air Filter at Amazon and for some reason Walmart had one; the only one I have ever seen the sell.

Benz Kid, the name of the part you are looking for is oil catch canister. get one that has a drain. some of them also have elaborate air filters on top, though i suspect those are unnecessary.

oldsinner, did you test this with a catch can first?? i think even healthy engines throw out gook this way and i bet you are spilling plenty without realizing it.

I replaced the ribbed pan on my '85 617 Cali engine with an earlier smooth type with the oil return line from the stock catch can. I'm planning on fabricating a catch can that will take the "vapors" from the rocker arm cover, condense them out on stainless wool in the catch can and then drain the oil back to the sump. The can will be vented to the intake to burn the cleaned oil vapor.

I just cleaned the intake manifold and was amazed at the amount of gunk and goo that had collected. Never want to do that job again.

And i pulled my egr off and looked in my intake manifold and there was alot of goo and oil residue in it. what should i do about that. And oldsinner does the 170 thermostat make your engine run cooler?

I would be leery of using a spectre air filter, cloth filters don't filter as clean as paper, and diesels like really really clean air. If you don't have a lot of blowby, you can just run a hose down under the car from the crank case vent and vent it to the atmosphere, otherwise fab up some kind of oil separator, maybe using a water separator for compressed air or something

What i always hear is, stock cleaner setup is best as it fillers the best and isn't an air restriction any way. Only reason to convert is for looks.

I would not vent your CC to intake pipe. When I did this i fought oil leaks for ever. As soon as i vented to atmosphere (and already had replaced every seal/gasket possible with engine in the car) all leaks stopped. It was a very worn engine though with quite a bit of blow by, so with a good engine it may be fine. I know it seems like vac in intake would help CC breathing but for some reason it did not work out like this for me.

If I come across a stock set up I'd probably go back to it. Cooler air with the ducting and better filter, I actually find the turbo sound getting annoying with the custom intake.

With my last engine i removed the separator and used it with a bracket. Now I am simply using a high temp plastic Tee jammed into pipe so any oil drains down tube, and other side of Tee to hose that goes out spring hole on pass side. Was "temporary" but works just fine so i left it like this. This engine has very little blow by though.

Well, I did not convert mine for looks. I wanted to stop the Blow-By from getting into the Air Filter Element and at the same time I was able to utilize a fairly new on the market Fram Washable Air Filter (Amsoil also has one).

So on my set-up I used something larger as the Breather and inserted the Blow-By outlet closer to the Turbo and away from the Air Filter. No more Air Filter contamination by the Oil Vapor.

The Fram Washable Air Filter (I have 3 Vehicles using their Washable Air Filters) is not a Cloth Gauze type Filter and needs no Oil Coating and washes with Dish Soap.
That is saving me the expense of buying New Filters.

Also Fram made a Washable Filter for my Van and I had to do zero modification to use it. The Normal Fram Throw Away Air Filter starts with the letters CA; the Washable ones start with CA.

i didnt do it for looks either it was easier to get a different intake than to keep having to mess with the rattling and i want to be able to see everything i can when i pop the hood. i want to see the problms not hide them with a big old air cleaner set up

can anyone tell me if i can still make it a cold air intake by putting some kind of ducting around the filter
