Fan clutch on all the time suddenly?
After picking my car up from the repair shop (2nd turbo replacement...) I noticed the fan clutch seems to be locked on all the time now I think it still limits the speed of the fan but as soon as you start the engine the fan roars.
Considering I just replaced the clutch & fan @ $300 about 10,000 miles ago I'm not very pleased. Is there anything I can check? -J

Before it would only roar when the engine was warm, and would stop once things cooled off a bit.

opposite pain
I feel your pain in the opposite way. I'm thinking my fan clutch is just the opposite ..... never engages. I've never heard the "roar" and I had it pretty toasty under the hood once.....95 degree day with the AC on and sitting still.... you know the routine.
I just picked up a plastic fan upgrade this past weekend in the junkyard. That will be going on when I tackle the various work up front.

the fan will roar on a cold startup but release in about 10 to 20 seconds, The silicone fluid leaks into the working chamber causing this.
The later OM606 fans and clutches are very slippy and hence quiet. but they do their job like the old ones.

the fan should decouple at about 3000 to 4000 rpm, It is on all the time then its bad too, usually this is caused by too much fluid in the clutch or the metering pin is stuck open due to dirt etc.

I took the clutch off tonight... looks like the clutch oil is leaking out around the hub. I think I'll just leave it off for now and have the pusher fans run on low... it's cooled off here a lot now and doesn't get above 75*.
$300 down the tubes. I'm really annoyed at how quickly the clutch failed. I'll probably replace it with a single electric puller fan and ditch the pusher fans off of the front of the radiator. -J

Since removing the belt fan and shroud I've noticed the car runs cooler on the highway. I connected the dual pusher fans (standard on the 91) to a thermostat, the slow speed keeps up with city driving fine.
I think airflow with the stock belt fan is not as good as it could be. There is so little room between the fan and engine the air has no place to go. With the fan gone air can flow past the engine and out the bottom of the car easier. -J Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
