quite like my situations usually.. I get asked to get rid of the benz and I say that when its tired, engine + trans dead - all parts are NLA - I'll rid of it. Then I show them the insane mile MBz on the internet.

Otherwise Im rolling twice as smoothly as your new shiny corolla.

while living in an apartment right next to a QFC in Bellevue, I would routinely identify the clattering of old diesel Mercs in the parking lot as customers came and went, and I would head to the window to look at them. There were times when five or six would be in the parking lot at once. A friend said if I were a dog, these cars would be my squirrels. LOL.

You look at most decent or cool older cars on the road and think about stuffing an OM617 turbo under their hoods.

My short list of diesel conversions I want to do:
1959 Willys Wagon
Jeep CJ5 or CJ6
Jeep Cherokee (early 90's)
Toyota FJ-40

When you often have a conversation that goes like this:

"Man, I need a new car. Mine is almost 10 years old and has 100,000 miles on it."

'What do you mean you need a new car. That one is almost new...'

"It's falling apart! I had to replace the alternator last year!"

'That's not a reason to get rid of a car. Alternators only last so long.'

"Yeah but I also had to replace the battery when the alternator died and it needs new brakes."

'I don't see what the problem is...'

"Why, what do you drive?"

'A 30 year old Mercedes Diesel with 300,000 miles on it.'

"Holy crap! Well, it's a Diesel; it will run forever."

'Well, you still have to do maintenance.'

"I wonder if I should buy a Hyundai this time?"

'Oh lord...' *Walks away*

When you find it critical to spend a weekend organizing your MB parts by category so you don't spend two hours looking for a spare light bulb.

When your emergency parts kit weighs more than the passengers in the vehicle, combined.

When you tell your friends if an EMP ever occurred, your car will still run and drive.

You find a letter from the MBCA and it has black Diesel oil spots on it but you found it in the kitchen.

^This.

I get the 'freakshow' look just mentioning that I have 2 123's occasionally.
