Glow plugs on a 603

Its time to change the glow plugs on my SDL, they are getting weak.

I know I have to remove that intake manifold crossover pipe, do I need a new gasket? The one on there now looks cracked.. does anyone have the part number?

Anything else I should know before digging in when the parts get here?

I don't think it's possible to kill this car, I've driven 550 miles with it in less than 24 hours, and just been driving the hell out of it (to its limits) for the past 40 thousand miles and it still shows no signs of giving up!

- going for 300k by december 31st -

Just turned 260,000 today.

John

John:

Try this part number: 602-096-00-80.

Many places list this as the intake manifold gasket. It should be around $3 and the intake manifold gasket shoud be around $10.

I heard you need to remove the intake manifold as well to replace all 6 glow plugs. Some say it is possible to do it without removing it then you need some special tools.

If you could document this repair, it would be great. I am thinking about replacing mine in the summer.

I replaced all six in my SDL last summer, it is much easier with the intake out of the way. As loubapache stated the gasket is cheap, I got mine online. While I had the crossover pipe and manifold off it gave me a chance to clean out all of the gunk from the pcv valve and the vacuum port to the ALDA. As for the amount of time, it took longer to clean the parts than it did to replace the glowplugs. A set of swivel-head allen wrenches makes the job alot easier.

Part Numbers ?

Gasket, Intake #602-096-0080 - rectangular with adhesive sealant crossover pipe to intake manifold - MBUSA $4.16 ea.

Seal Ring, #013-997-2948 - round green O - ring turbo pipe to crossover pipe - MBUSA $6.82 ea.

Just picked up these parts at the dealership so I can inspect/clean crossover pipe. I got a couple of each because I anticipate having to remove and clean the intake manifold of carbon buildup next. I'll replace the six glow plugs then too.

If your thinking of taking of the valve cover :

Valve Cover Gasket # 603-016-0221 and the rubber grommet for the blowby pipe in the valve cover near the oil fill hole is Seal Ring # 601-016-0163 mine is hard and leaking. Good Luck!
