Welding 240D head?

Can a cylinder head be welded? I found out I have a crack in my 1980 240D head. The guy at the machine shop told me about a shop that may be able to weld it. just wondering if anyone has had this done with any success? Thanks Rick

With the number of used OM616 heads available in the world, I wouldn't bother with welding.

Is the crack on the outside of the Cylinder Head or in the Combustion area?

If the crack is on the outside is it accessible?

Just get another head. I wouldn't trust a 616 head that's been through enough thermal stress to crack it. The price of a used head is low and you'll have better confidence in the repair.

in the 80's we used to get our ultra rare extremely rare Lee Sheppard race heads welded when the porting was too severe... it's an extremely complicated very very very very very difficult process to weld cast iron successfully...
brazing is possible on external cracks, but internal to the combustion chamber... pricey...

I've got a couple of good 240 heads I will sell reasonably but the shipping to the NW would be considerable. I imagine you can find one locally.

I think 200.00 is high for the average used head for a 240d. May be wrong though. I think also they interchange okay but if you get a complete head there was a power boost on the later two forty engines that was enabled by the head I think.

Probably cam profile is different. Something like six horse power more. Personally I would not purchase an old head with the large glow plugs. There is nothing wrong with them except perhaps the lower power if complete and the issue with dealing with special adaptor type plugs to get away from the old series glow plugs.

Especially in this economy you can make an offer for a head. The owner may fall away from their two hundred dollar desire. There are not a lineup of people looking for used heads for the 616 blocks.

Did a search in your area for PNP and here are 2, a 82 and 83. actually punched in unlimited milage.
The head from PNP are around $50. 1980 is the first year with the pencil GP`s. 79 and older are the larger Loop plugs.

I like the power boost idea. I,ll try to get a later head if i can . I have a good stock pile of pencil glow plugs. I found a couple listed for $165 not sure how much to ship. Thanks for the info about the picknpulls I,ll have to check them out. I checked the one here in Tacoma only 300,s. I,d hate to drive down to Oregon only to find out somebody already got the heads. The motors still got good compression about 320 in each hole. Only thing I,m concerned about is the oil having coolent in it may have damadged the bearings.
