New to me E 300
Hi everyone I just purchsed a new to me E 300 diesel Benz
I dont think the GP's are working because the PO told me he has to use starting fluid to get it going in the morning but once it is started and warmed up it is fine all day. How do I go about fixing this? The other issuse is the MIL for the exterior lights is on I replaced the headlights last night but that didnt fix the problem. I did notice either the high or low beam light are not working just not sure which of the 2 it is. How do i fix this issuse? The cruise control doesnt work How do I fix this? Im hoping for all thses issuse all I need to do is replace fuses but Im sure its alot more than that. Thanks for the help.

Hi Stujie, welcome to the forum.
The 300e diesel is a nice model of mb to have. The po using starter fluid is not a good thing as it can do serious damage to the engine. Start by looking at your owners manual and seeing the functionality of your headlight dimming switch. If you don't have one get one. If you are a deisel tech you should be able to find and check your fuses. The glow plugs unscrew just like a sparkplug but smaller. On that model getting to them is the hardest part of the job. I believe some people remove the intake to access them. I suggest you also get a good repair manual for the car as a base point. You may be able to find a used one or you can buy them new. The factory service manual is the best but there are others. This should get you started. Good luck!

Starting fluid can damage diesel engines that use glow plugs. What ever damage may have been done is done. You need to find out why the PO needed to use starting fluid. Discontinue the use of starting fluid. If you need to, use WD-40 in place of starting fluid.
Get a factory service manual for that car. It can be found on CD inexpensively. Remove all the glow plugs. Test them. Perform a compression test. Compare the results to the FSM specifications. Test values with engine at operating temp. approx. 80 C Compression pressure, normal 26 - 32 bar Minimum pressure, approx. 18 bar Permissible difference between cylinders max. 3 bar If the compression is good and the plugs were bad, easy, cheap fix. If the plugs are good and the compression is bad, not so easy or cheap. Was the car ever run on alternate fuels ? Is there a lot of blow by ? Smoke in the exhaust ? what color ? when ?

Mercedes Diesel Glow Plug Repair
also, your car has a block heater on the passenger's side of the motor. if there is no cord, there will be a black screw on cap, remove it, and install a cord and you can plug the car in at night to warm the engine, and make it easy to start in the morning until you get the tools and plugs installed.

That is telling you that 1 or more GP's are bad.

Gregmn, thanks for the info I dont have a manual yet, I have read someplcace that the intake manifold needs to be removed to replcae the GP's if that is the case does it have a reusable gasket on it?
What GP's are required for this engine?

I hate idiot previous owners that treat these engines like an old school Detroit diesel.

You should be able to replace the glow plugs without removing the manifold. I have done that on 603's, I don't see why a 602 would be much different.
I think the person who said to remove the intake was thinking of the 606 not the 602.

I assume you mean 300D and not E300? Since it's a 1993?
As to your cruise control, it's most likely a bad amp....get forum member jamesdean to rebuild it for you.

It's easier on the 603 to remove the manifold. Plus you can clean it out. Be carefully putting the bolts back in so to not cross thread one.

You will have to remove the manifold. Use a long reach Torx40 to avoid braking off the CCV fittings.
Search for and read advice on GP removal on the 606 engine. Here's a couple: W210 broken glow plug removal - plan to make a nice DIY post. PeachPartsWiki: Broken Glow Plug Removal Good luck.

get the engine hot and toasty warm - more like 100C on the gauge, then unscrew the plugs. They are known for siezing in the head.
