Figured out something this weekend

The manual sunroof pan on a 300D wagon is NOT the same as 240D or 300D passenger sedan! In other news I will be pulling the manual pan out of my 82 to de rust and redo much like the completely rebuilt wagon manual sunroof I now own with nothing to do with it.

And I thought i would be able to get my headliner up in the 81 this weekend!

Oh great, now you tell me. I pulled one about a yr 1/2 ago out of a 85 TD to install in our 85 300D. dang thing is perfect too.

Yeah, X2, what`s the difference?

Most everything MB does is plug and play, or use the same part on various models, cuts cost. Rear Trailing arms and Steering knuckles come to mind.

Yeah I bought this one from NC-Friend. It was in great shape just needed some rust removal and I bought new springs, clips, etc.

The 2 tabs that attach in the back are a different length. And the contour transition from where the front gasket ends and the thicker back gasket begins is different. So you wind up with a big old gap in the backend the roof lid does not seat right. I think it's because the roof contours are different. The wagon has a flatter roof near the sunroof where the sedan has more of a slopedown on the back.

I will try to take pictures tonight so you can see what I mean. I was shocked too. I thought all the sunroofs in the w123 were plug and play as well. I should have known when the bolt holes for the gasket from the dealer didn't align something was amiss.

Could it be the metal sliding lid is all that is different, and the whole frame assembly is the same? If it just a matter of the flatter roof vs the more curvature of the Sedan roof, then it just might be only the lid.

interesting indeed... this means those needing to swap to a manual sunroof need to find a sedan for the swap...
the odd thing is, the SD is the same as the D sunroof opening...
