There is widely held consensus that the quality of the current Optima products is not in the same league as the original offerings. Evidently, the manufacturing plant was relocated south of the border several years ago and quality went south concurrently. I could fill a short bus with former Optima fans that will not touch a current Optima battery with a long stick.

Thanks, man, you just saved me 40 bucks, not to mention a 2 hour drive to the nearest Autozone, which used to be my go-to place for batteries. I just ordered a new battery, that I can pick up in town, for under 100 bucks!

My neighbor got over 15 years in his '89 Chevy V8 out of his Optima!


The last time I looked into them (Optimas) - their most powerful CCA was I believe 650 CCAs. The MB diesels have either I believe going from memory - 750 CCA batteries as their standard issue.

I may be off on the above CCAs, (please correct me if I am off) since it was 15 +/- years ago that I looked into the Optimas @ an Auto Zone store near me.

Check it out for yourself, but unless Optima was able to Up their CCAs, I'd not put one in my MB diesel.

Why need so many CCA? You're in Texas so never cold, and anyway the max amperage you can pull on a MB diesel without setting the damn thing on fire is what... maybe 100 A at the starter motor, 50 A at glow plugs, and 20 A of random other crap. I know the battery output amps goes down as sulfation takes hold but still

that starter motor is a 2kw motor - so a free spin is about 150 add the diesel compression to the equation and the motor will pull even more.

All I know is that my Ford 7.3 PSD has two 850 CCAs in concert. I upped the choice in batteries 100 CCAs when I replaced the '02s in '09. I don't see the downside to having CCAs?

I've concluded that the best bang for the buck is to get a blemished version of that MT-93. $40 with slight cosmetic imperfections.
