weight difference

is there really that much difference b/t a 240d and 300d? feels like it's killing my 1980 240. looks like i lowering springs on the front. today i parked next an 1985 300d. looked like a 2 inch difference. mine looked cleaner -till i had to pop the clutch to get it started.

is it different springs? i like the light weight truck stance on these cars with hub caps.

still rolling original looking shocks.

probably around 600 lbs between the stock thin aluminum wheels, the very light 4 speed... the spartan climate control, and the shorter motor... maybe only 400...

feels like you can dribble the front. 400lbs is quit a bit for these cars. i replaced the rears while the tank was out. it might have 500 miles post transplant. this month- electric work and new rear tires.

this site doesn't sell 240 or 300 springs. the other guy says not to use 300 springs on 240's. is it the weight or mounts? i'm thinking weight.

Weight. If you're going to autocross with your 240 you could go with the 300TD springs and sway bar for a real stiff ride.
Of course it won't help on the up hill portions

The 240D front springs are different than the 300D springs.

When I installed the 240D 4-spd in the 85 300D, and removed the auto trans, the front end came up quite a but. there was a noticable effect on the way the car handled. seemed to wonder some.

I found a set of 240 springs in a 160k mile 240 in the yards, installed these and the front end came down and looks good the way she sit. rids good, but is a little soft in the turns on a MT. road. I just installed a TD front Sway bar. we`ll see how she handles when we get everything back together.

When looking in the FSM. it looks like MB spects out each car with different spring depending how it is optioned. 4 cyl, 5 cyl. 5 cyl turbo eng, sun roof, no sunroof, 4-spd, auto trans. etc.....

Another thing, your 80 240D has a 17 gallon fuel tank, the 300D has a 21 gallon.

If all you do is change the four cylinder for a five non turbo I estimate less than 100
# difference. The turbo motor must weigh another 50# yet. I put the NA 300 euro in my old 83 240 and the nose just settled down a bit. I though the ride and handling were just fine and the lower nose looked good.

That car originally had a 240 automatic IIRC so the difference between that and the five speed was not great.

New bilsteins will raise the car an inch or so often.

new shocks after i get all the bugs worked out! this motor sat for about 9 years -the car for 4yrs. it's in need of some pampering, but runs good. seems like it's starving for diesel.

currently having charging issues. pulling the alt tomorrow to get it tested. need to read up about brushes. not sure what that's about.

thanks for all the feed back.
