Best years for the CDI/new diesels
What years are best for mileage and power for the new diesels? How about in the "R" class?
thanks |

2005/06 E320 - if you can believe what others here have posted as the actual facts, RE: mpg - which I do not. For the buck - they're the way to go since they're getting real cheap versus the E320 Bluetecs. Although the 2008/09 E320s get every bit as good mpg from everything I've read. I'd say it's a 'pick 'em' when considering the 05/06/07/08/09 E320s. Depends on how new and low-miles example you want to pay for, IMO. If you want the nuances that the '11/'12 E350 Bluetecs offer - then your mpg will be about the same as the '08'09 E320 Bluetecs. About the R-Class: I would avoid the R-Class (both gass and diesel) simply based on what I've read about the dismal reliability and greater than what you might think cost of ownership per mile to drive as per repair costs.

My mom was looking for a new car back in 09 and we looked at an R class and were turned off. However it's half a wagon half an mini van. If it has the mileage of the 04 cdi and the room of a wagon and it's in my price range...

R class
There was only one diesel motor in the R class the V-6 any deviation was minor.
There were no Iron head CDI's ever. At least in America. The 05/06 is preferred because it can run alternative fuel better i.e--Biodiesel and WVO. If that is not for you get the newest nicest one you can afford. IMHO. |

I hope I can find a nice 211 wagon, but if I find a nice r class that might fit the bill also. |

If I had the cash, I wouldn't buy a new diesel....I would buy a wagon with a bad drive train and use the monies to rebuild everything....and drive it for 500k miles.....I can still fix it, find parts and best of all no strange computer or iPad equipment I have to worry about updating and burning up.....

None of the new pumps/inj's are going to appreciate high percentages of bio. Sure, some do it anyway. 04-06 = I6 07-09 = V6 10-present = V6 with AdBlue/trade the spare for run flat tires. The I6 engine is high revving and very flexible. The V6 engine is low rev. Lugs around town at 1100 rpm like a big block chevy and pulls away when you feed it throttle like a big block too. Turbo is probably more responsive than the CDI and has 7 gears so there is always anohter power band. Very, very different animals. I like my 09 a lot. Very comfy, quiet, airbags everywhere, would light its tires up if the computer didn't control traction so well. Gets 38-40mpg at 80mph on the highway. I do only get 24-26mpg on the 1 mile ride back and forth to my daughters school, but thats still 250 round trips before I have to fill up again so it isn't so bad. The I6 would be easier to wrench on, the V6 is VERY crowded under the hood

I like wagons too. the r class Seemed like a great utility family car with good mpg. Sad to hear it is not reliable. For the money you are talking I'd look at Audi or passats too. They make some nice stuff.

We came VERY close to pulling the trigger on a nice 2006 320 diesel last year for under 17K. It was in outstanding shape, had leather, service records, regular oil changes etc. The wife fell in love with something else, but I would buy the 320 again if we had the chance.
As for the R's, I don't want any flames here- but I think the R's are some of the least aesthetically pleasing autos benz has turned out. And, my dad bought one after he had hip replacement surgery and couldn't get into his G35 anymore, and he hates it. He calls it "the mini van" and swears he would have been better off buying some soccer mom/grandma van from chrysler. The service costs are astronomical, the interior is standard "easy to clean ketchup and kid vomit off" grey plastic, the insurance is super high, and on and on. He had to have the engine replaced because the quickie lube place underfilled his crankcase- and he drove it 60 miles before it seized- but according to him there were no "low oil" or "check engine" lights before it just quit due to oil starvation. In closing, I don't know about your mom, but my mom talks a big talk about wanting something "reliable" and "practical" but in the end, she really wanted something "pretty." So, take her around and let her sit in a few of them and look at them side by side. I'd be surprised if she didn't like the e320. Last edited by satyr; 05-20-2013 at 02:28 PM.
