IWIS timing chain master link

The IWIS timing chain for my 300SD only came with the permanent master link, not a temporary link with c-clips. For those who have turned in a new chain, did you press the side plate on the master link supplied to connect new chain to old? How did you remove side plate after new chain rolled in without damaging it? I have the MB crimping tool thanks to a forum member. Thanks for the advice.

John

The Temp Master Link does not come with the Timing Chain.

If ordered from Mercedes it is set of 3 different sizes.

I don't know which one of the Gasoline Engines uses the Chain Link with the Clip. Perhaps that is in the below repair links.

One of the Members claims you can slide the crimp type Master link into the Chain minus the outer link and feed it through like that. I don't know if that is a good idea or not.

I used the crimp type with 2 small O rings and duct tape . Sounds real Mickey Mouse but it was the safest way to keep the chains connected, not lose the O rings, and be certain it wouldn't come apart.

Nice website and car. I use duct tape for a lot of things, but not sure I trust it for this job!

I have never installed a New Timing Chain so far as mine is OK.

So I don't know what I will do when the time comes.

Just use the link that you remove to separate the old chain.
Connect the old and new chain with this link, also use the old center plate and leave the outer plate off.
That is enough to roll the new chain in.

I'll give it a try. Thanks. The old center plate has enough tension to hold the old master link in place?

It does if you wrap some duct tape around it

You put tension on it when you pull the chain.
I changed many chains this way and never had a problem.

I'll use your technique tomorrow and report back. Thanks again.
