70°C Thermostat:

For those that have asked, the 70°C thermostat, known as part of a 'Tropical Cooling' package is still available under part number A6172003015...Robert

Just curious....what's the purpose of cooler-running thermostats (the 70C one you mention and the 60C one you use)? Is it to compensate for some other part of the system that is defective? Or does it have a legitimate use in a properly running system? Thanks.

It must be a dealer only item since I can't locate it on any of the usual parts searches online.

I was just looking at the VW parts catalog, the tstat in my 12 Passat is listed as 87C - 135C. I don't know what VW was thinking, but I would call an engine at 275*F overheating, not at full operating temp...

FYI:
According to Valvoline.com for Zerex G-05 "A 50% to 70% concentration range is suggested for optimum corrosion protection."

At 70%, the boiling point with a 15 psi cap is 277 deg F. Not sure what coolant you use on your VW or what rad cap they use, but perhaps that is what VW is referring to.
