Tie Rod Ends Question
I'm getting ready to drop about $500 into rebuilding my front end. My question is regarding the tie rod ends. I notice they are sold by left and right hand thread. do I need one of each for each tie rod on each side? My calculation was buying 2 ends is cheaper than buying the entire tie rod. Am I missing anything?

On the SD, inner and outer tie rods can be swapped on install without consequence other that turning the adjustment will be opposite of normal.
You need 1 inner and 1 outer for each side. Yes, buy ends only if you don't need the center. Buy the center if a monkey has buggered yours with vice grips. You can keep track of which is which inner/outer and install them in the correct place and know which one you need if it fails. I've taken to buying them locally because several brand name parts have been in the wrong box and I don't want to pay shipping to return them. Also, the locals can get replacements faster than online vendors.

I thought that I read there was 2 different diameters of the Threaded parts. Be careful when you order.

Yeah I'm ordering from Pelican later today so I'll grab the title for the car and make sure I have the right Chasis number. I think they only offer a 14mm? I'm replacing everything. Shocks, damper, bushings, control arms, you name it. If it's rubber or a wear part it's getting replaced. I was going to go with the lemfoerder parts except for when I can get OEM. Basically lemforder when I can't get OEM. Once I get this massive pile of parts together I need to see about renting a coil spring compressor, ball joint separator, and ball joint installer. Going to be a great late summer project. Hopefully after this I can get the 81 back on the road this fall.
