Driver side knocking at any speed 1981 300SD
Hello everyone,
I suddenly started experiencing a moderate knocking under the driver's feet. This occurs at any speed (5km/h up to 120 km/h). It is related to wheel speed and not engine speed. Putting it in neutral while driving does not change anything. It does not make the knocking noise standing still on idle (or if rpm is increased). While driving, the noise goes completely away as soon as I turn in any direction. The noise is not at all related to any bumps on the road (it even occurs at very small speeds on a perfect road). This noise has not been gradually building up. It appeared all of a sudden and with a very distinct knock. Thanks for any help. |

Have you visually inspected the suspension components for something obvious?

Suggest inspecting the rear sway bar links and the rear axle boots for tares...

I would say that you should take the wheel off and check for anything rubbing or touching things they are not supposed to. If it were suspension, I would expect it to make a knocking at a certain speed or when you go over bumps. Could it be coming from the rear end?

Good chance it may be a rear outer cv joint. If boots are intact add some heavy oil. May be too late though if the noise is always there but worth a try. You stand a much better chance if it is either intermittent or occurs during the later phase of a longer drive. May not be a cv joint of course but it is a suspect.
