Angry 190D muffler box fell off but NO loud noise??

Went to work this morning in my 190D and heard a loud bang. Stopped the car and saw the muffler box fell off. It was a clean break by the joint, just before the box. The muffler was stamped 11/83 so it is original. Put the box inside the trunk but the funny thing is there is NO loud noise. The exhaust sounds exactly like it was before, or very similar. I would have heard a deafening loud noise with gas car. It is the first time it happened with a diesel car so I am wondering why there is no loud noise. If it sounds like as before then do I need a new muffler box? Can I just put a straight pipe thru and be done with it, right, wrong?

There's still a resonator under the car in the middle that gets rid of most of the sound, the rear muffler is just additional. You can straight pipe the whole thing if you wanted. I did.

Usually with a Turbo, the exhaust will be quieter than with a NA engine. X2 with the Resonator farther up line, it will quiet the noise a bit.

You can get some droning in the cabin with straight piping the system, may vary between various vehicles.

Your are young at heart AH-Kay, where is your teen age sprit. Straight pipe it. Zoom Zoom.

Hi Charlie. Thanks for the encouragement but I do not want to go deaf at my 'young' age. Actually the car pretty much sounds like it was before, unless my hearing is going downhill. It is very quiet as if the muffler is still there, except the diesel chatter, of course. I like this toy as it is a 5-SP and everything works, I meant everything, including the cruise control and cold A/C. It is a fun car to drive and is a keeper. It lacks a bit of power as it is 4-cyl N/A but the 5-sp makes up for it.

I may try to get a shop to fix it or I will jury rig something. Even straight piping it is not a bad idea as I do not feel an increase in decibel without the muffler.

The rear muffler for your car (I've got one too but mine is an auto, the 5spd is better, I've had one before) isn't all that expensive. I had the exact same thing happen with mine. If yours sounds exactly the same as it did before you've got a leak somewhere. There are 2 joints closer to the engine with donuts in them, maybe one of your donuts is leaking? I've got one thats gotten bad which I need to replace.
