It got me through Atlanta Snow Jam 2014

I love my 124 300d Benz. I really wish I kept it in better condition because it showed its metal the last two days.

My Benz was started at 2PM on Tuesday and ran until 11:10 AM(21 hours) this morning when I had to part it a quarter mile from my house because the road was absolutely impassable but

I only burned through a little over a 1/3 of a tank of diesel while most gasoline powered cars(Including a recent model S550 Sharp car as I spent 5 hours drooling over it, maybe someday I can afford a S350 Bluetec) had to be shut off to not run out of gas.

Despite the ice and antilock brakes not really working any more I made it over 40 treacherous miles. The last 10 miles where awful this morning. I made a mistake and went too fast on the freeway this morning on the last leg and I turned and my passenger rear fender hit the median but I was able to keep going. Other than flattening the fender it did not appear to do any damage.

The only reason I didn't make it home is because I had to lose momentum because of kids playing in the road and it was not possible to back up to a point where I could get adequate momentum but after some afternoon melting I brought her home. I was leaning towards wanting a 210 E300 as my next car but I'm now thinking another w124

I was warm cozy and safe. What more can I ask

No road problems around here and I always enjoy the commute in the 95 E300.

here are the times I wish I had asr, or LSD... there is a lsd e420 at my parts yard, but I've not had the time to go pull it... and I think it'll be gone by the time I go to get it. WAAAHHHH.... why do the yards scrap imports in 50 days, but american cars get 120?

I recall the 1981 snow jam in Atlanta. Humorous is all the Yankees who said "people down here can't drive in the snow". You ask where their car is and they say "stuck, had to walk home". Nobody can drive on a sheet of ice, as the South often gets. I recall a 1987 icing in Atlanta when I drove past a 4WD Jeep that was spinning tires on a freeway bridge, as I drove slowly and surely by in my FWD Aries. I-80 here in the Sierras is similar. Idiots from states like Utah would balk at putting on chains to cross Donner Pass, then slide off the road into a ditch, so CA started strictly enforcing it. You stil see fools speeding in 4WD vehicles who think they are immune, but don't realize that all vehicles have "4 wheel braking", so they are no safer.

some taxi services that ran W124 in Germany would not shut off the engines for days, not even between refuelling.

They were shut off when they were pulled into the bay for inspection and service.

These are very solid cars - I enjoy driving mine (infact now that it rides so good my wife sneaks away with it)

Well the conventional wisdom was the snow wasn't going to hit that bad in the northern suburbs. Diesels are the perfect car for that kind of weather. I do know semi trucks used to idle constantly and still do in cold climates. Its just more validation though about how awesomely built older Mercedes Diesels really are.

whilst sitting in the jam with the engine clacking away at idle you notice that the fuel is getting low - just get a few gallons of corn oil and pour it in (when no diesel pump in sight).

watch as people are amazed that the thing still runs on human food.

Around here we are prepared and salt the roads so they don't turn into ice sheets.

The snow banks on the sides of my driveway are about equal to the height of a W126 roof if not higher at this point....and we're due for 7+ more inches tomorrow...
