You're right - I'm WAY far from Boone. Pretty much diagonally across a wide state.

Sounds like Thayer is your guy.

That would be funny, asking someone to check out a vehicle for them and then seeing it added to the person doing the favors user profile. I have done some checks on machinery before and just did not want to be out of pocket for any travel expenses, and a small fee if time was critical.

I guess that's the risk of getting help from strangers.

Thayer, can you check out a vehicle for me in Boone ? Its at a dealer right now and they said the car has a pile of receipts. He doesn't want to go through it.

PM me if you think its doable. Thanks.

Jo- No worries. There's generally no cars worth looking at in the Northeast.....ahhh, rust belt!!

(although the VT car Shertex listed looks good, which is another way of saying it was either garaged in Winter or came from outside NE)

FWIW, I bought a year ago from forum member on pics. Flew Boston - Norfolk, VA & drove home. It been good....for a 350SDL (knock on wood)

Yup, if nobody jumps on it by late this month, I'm buying a one way out of Charlotte to his house.

Most cars here are very rusty but if there's an exception it will almost always be clearly spelled out in the ad. That VT ad said car isn't driven winters. My car came from Texas which was mentioned in the ad. Just today I found a nice Toyota pickup with no engine or trans that had migrated from CA and will make a great start to someone's project.

I might trust an ebay service for a gasser, but not with a diesel, and especially not with a 20-30 year old one. I just can't believe they'd have even the foggiest idea of what, or how, to check for mechanical issues.

You could always find one of the recommended mechanics who's nearby the car and have someone take it there for a pre-purchase inspection.

Yeah, there still are some nice vehicles here too . It's not absolutely necessary to garage in the winter, either: my parts car lived most of its life on the coast of Maine, and yet the only area of rust in the whole car came from water that had leaked in -- something that would have been fixed if the car had not sat idle (in grass!) since 2002 and actually been driven by someone who would have noticed a leak. I parted it out not because of rust but because every single electrical accessory was broken, the exhaust system had been stolen, the calipers were bad, and other usual "car-sat-next-to-a-barn-for-nine-years" stuff. How was it so rust-free? It was oilcoated every year. Undoing bolts -- even the dreaded engine mount allens -- was easy because even they had not rusted. I'm having my Texas car oilcoated this winter.

OP; if I have the time, I'm always available for a small fee to cover time/expenses in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area. Texas is a great place to find rust-free MBs. I know.......I've bought two of 'em in the past 22 years.

Unless a car dealer can sell me on the idea of buying the car without a Carfax, I'm not buying. I've read all the reasons why Carfax is a scam, etc., but I'm also noticing it's by those not wanting to pay for the service, or with some axe to grind. That said, there's not enough reasons out there to bully anyone into buying a car because you don't want to come up with the money for the buyer to see a Carfax report.

Thayer came through for me and checked out the car. Got a bunch of pics of details and receipts as well.

Thanks again Thayer!

Here's some photos of the engine showing a little leak.

How does it look ?
