W124 Rear Hub Set Dowel
 

I had purchased some Balo rear rotors for my 91 300D and my 92 300D (from that place in Arizona). The rotors that I bought have six holes: five for the bolts and one for a set screw. But on the hub there's also a "dowel" (on the parts supplier site I see it's called a locator pin) that sticks out, requiring yet another hole in rotor. So unless I drill holes or eliminate the dowel, these rotors won't work on the 91.

I contacted customer service. I was told that Mercedes eventually decided that that dowel was unnecessary and started manufacturing hubs without them; and that, furthermore, it is perfectly fine to remove that dowel.

Anyone know anything about this transition? Specifically, does anyone know when the transition was made? I'm wondering what I'll find on my 92.

Assuming we're talking about the same place in Arizona, did the item description note that the locator pin should be removed when you ordered? I see notes indicating rotors with and without locator pin holes today. Pelican doesn't have any such notes even if some rear rotor images show no locator pin hole.

Need photos. Sounds like a defective Balo rotor to me. They should all have the extra hole for the dowel/locator pin.

What part number rotors did you buy?

I ordered the rotors a while ago....either the note wasn't there at the time or I missed it.

2014231212BA was the number.

No, it's not a defect. Apparently at some point MB decided to do away with the locator pin....so there are cars that have no need of the extra hole.

As far as I can tell, ALL of the images on Pelican have rotors with only five holes. So it would be very easy unwittingly to buy a rotor that wouldn't fit without modification.

Brembo's technical drawing clearly shows a dowel hole required for the original part number.

From what I read in the tech forum, the 202 rotor never had a locating pin hole. Did Balo make the decision to spec the 202 rotor in place of the 201 or did they follow MB? Does the EPC show the 201 part superseded by the 202 part for the 124?

How many concours points do you lose for removing the pin?

Good catch, Sixto. The original 201- number had the hole, but the EPC shows this was superceded/replaced by the 202- number, which apparently is hole-less.

I wonder if the gorillas at Midas and Meineke pound the 202 rotor onto the early 124 hub and push the locating pin into the park brake mechanism.
