My 1892 300SD has an 85 MPH speedo and my '84 300D (delivered in August of 1984) has a 120 MPH one.

Did you use it to help Grover Cleveland get reelected?

My 68 has a speedo that goes to 100mph, but top speed is about 80.

I think 82 was the cutoff year, my 83 300sd had the 120mph, and the cluster i replced it with was 80/85mph(dont remember) and it was out of an 82 year model. i liked it better with the breakdown of how fast i was going, tended to not speed as much

No, but it was good in the ol' bootlegging days. Got great mileage -- cops could never catch me at fuel stations!

It was almost 30 years old then, but still seemed quite modern (you know how these 'Benzes are).

my 79 was in US units, not metric, and went to 115...
I do not remember what the 80 speedo was... I think it was 85... I don't have any 81's... most likely it's 80-82 have the 85mph speedo...

Our former '81 turbo 300D estate had a speedo range up to 85mph only.

I did a little research and the U.S. speeodmeters with the bold 55 and max 85 were required between September of 1979 and the end of 1981.

Yep, here's the '81 speedo. In the wagon, the speed sensor was electric. When the fuse popped one night, I noticed I was driving the car without knowing the true speed (among other instrumentation that stopped working). Pulled over and replaced the fuse, and everything was back.
