1980 240d temp gauge.

Dropped '77 240d motor into '80 240d body. Question Temp Gauge, on the '77 motor there was a wire that ran to instrument cluster to the thermostat housing or so I remember. On the '80 there is no wire to hook to, i.e. it is NOT set up as it was on the '77. Driving the car down the road today the temp gauge started working? Was this a Miracle or Is there something I need to know?

Several years ago I rebuilt and dropped in a 1981 engine into my 79 (240Ds). One of the wires that ran to the head was for a GP sensor, which wasn't used and the other for the temp gauge. You probably have it figured out by now,
