What's This Part?
Driving home about five minutes ago, I braked somewhat hard and then went to change gears. There was something hanging above the clutch pedal. When I got home I got out a flashlight and investigated. It's a silver box about 8"x4"x1". It has a large electrical connection (14 to 20 pin I'd say without looking) at one end, and then a smaller connection of maybe 3 pin. It normally resides in the vicinity of the bottom of the panel under the dash. What is it? Is it important?

Sounds like you're cruise control box. It just came loose.

Cool. I'll unplug it and put it in the closet with the other parts I've taken off and never put back on. Cruise hasn't worked since I've had the car. I might fix it one day. (But I'll probably never get around to it.)
