Question 1995 E300 OM606 had to manually shut off

I had the intake manifold off to replace the fuel line from prefilter to heater, replaced the spin-on fuel filter as well. Put it all back together (probably the 10th time I have had the IM off) and starts up fine and then won't shut off.

I turned the manual shutoff and it took about 10 minutes to stop. I was trying to locate the vacuum leak- I could hear something puffing under the manifold but could not see it. Is the shutoff on the side of the injector pump and does it have a black top with the vacuum line going into it?

ugh

I'll see if I can locate the pics I took of mine. I had the same issue.

Mine ended up being the double "t" connection near where the vacuum lines router around the front of the engine. I managed to just pull one line out of the 5 way rubber part enough so it wouldn't shut down

Crap, this is the only picture I have at the moment. I know I switched these lines as well. (crossover pipe is removed in pic)

The shut off valve is not on the side of the IP. You might be thinking of the VCV (vacuum control valve) which controls shift quality for the transmission.

It is on the top of the IP, see attached picture item number 6.

The vacuum for the shutoff valve originates at the large vacuum line going to the brake booster which has a 't' connector very close to the brake booster itself. It is a brown line from memory. From here it goes into the cabin to the key and then out to the IP.

Your manual shutoff valve on top of the spin on filter shouldn't take 10mins to operate! See the video of this.

Hope this helps

shut off valve

It is my opinion that the only thing the shut off valve does effectively is leak. It is almost completely useless to stop the engine.

Most 95 E300s only have the shutoff valve that's part of the fuel filter bolt...these not uncommonly leak. The 95 that I had ALSO had a manual stop lever on the side of the IP. The only thing that I could figure was that at one point the IP had been rebuilt/replaced. If you look at the schematics for the car it's only "supposed" to have the valve on top of the fuel filter.

Shutoff vacuum circuit is always brown on the w123 & w124 diesels, IIRC.

Thank you for this diagram! The reason it took so long to shutoff is that the plastic knob is broken off and I have to use a pair of pliers to close it, and I didn't close it far enough and then turned it just a little more and it shutoff within about a minute.

I hate taking the IM off, it seems no matter how careful I am- inevitably a vacuum line comes off!

The ignition key shut off vacuum lines are independant of all the rest vacuum lines, you should see a brown vacuum line teed from the main brake booster line - that is the shutoff system, there should be one more brown line that sort of goes under the manifold and upto the pump - it pulls the pump to cause the engine to stall out.

I have keyed off the engine numerous times with the manifold off, never had an issue like yours.

I would suggest to carefully check the brown vacuum lines for leaks

Thumbs up

Fixed.

I guess I leaned on the brown vacuum line next to the driver side fender and snapped it, just a short piece of vacuum line to make the repair and she shuts off.

Great forum, thanks for all your input

Well it ran great until I got a mile from my house and it just cut out. Open the hood and there is a steady stream of diesel leaking out of the prefilter which was securely fastened. I was able to coast it home, pulled off the prefilter and filter to inspect and didnt seen anything wrong and get it started with a LOT of cranking and very little throttle. Go to take it out again and it dies about the same distance.

The filter is a brand new Mann- just put it on last night. Something tells me there is a blockage or something- fuel just runs out the prefilter so I pulled the hose off and tied it up so gravity would keep it from leaking and walked home to hopefully get some more advice from here

It sounds like it wants to start when feathering the pedal slightly. I didnt want to crush the starter or battery so now its just sitting in town with a puddle of diesel under it

Question

this may be a really stupid question but is there supposed to be an o-ring under the prefilter? Could the lack of that be causing my problem?

Yes, you need the o-ring and it doesn't come with the new filter...has to be ordered separately. Or just use the old one.
