What is this Thing on a 1984 300SD?

This black gizmo is on the passenger side of the engine compartment, just aft of the headlight.

What is it? What does it do?

At idle it vibrates and makes its own special rattle noise.

There are two horns in front of the radiator, so I'm pretty sure its not a horn.

I agree, the code plate on the car has: 551= Car alarm.

I don't see the front end for the alarm system anywhere, so I'll do some tracing of the cables and maybe remove the gizmo, alarm horn.

That is the alarm horn. When my alarm system failed and the horn would not shut off I cut the wire. No more alarm.

The alarm "computer" lives in the passenger footwell. It's made by Becker.

My wife was driving our 84SD right after we bought over 10 yrs ago. Suddenly the horn started beeping, scared her at first, and wouldn`t shut off. drove it down to the Indy, they put the key in the door and turned it, and that shut it off.

My thought exactly .

My 'SD doesn't have a factory alarm system, I guess.

I think it was an option after 1983.

Mine started going off today.

I have no info.

It appears that the horn is inside the cowl on the 1990 350 SDL.

Can I deactivate by going into the " passenger footwell" and cutting some wires ?

It also activates the the headlights.

Feedback, please!

The car is at an indie because I can't drive it that way. and I have no details for the alarm itself which has never worked until today!

Looks like the car's block-heater electrical cord.
