heavy flow drip method

Hello. I have a 1983 Mercedes 300sd Turbo that I am doing the drip method on. The pictorials online show a bad picture of the number one cylinder lobes pointing up. I have my timing set at 24 bdtc. In both positions (180) the manual pump is pumped and I am getting HEAVY flow. Is this because I am advanced? Or am I retarded for not being able to do the drip method. Why would it be pouring out? I have the drip tube facing the motor. The timing at 24. The throttle at full. And, the shut off vacuum pulled. Thanks in advanced, Kev
