1984 Mercedes 190 D belt tensioner replacement . I'mstumped!
I am trying to replace my tensioner. 1984 Mercedes 190 D 4 cylinder. Question can someone please post a a picture of the hole that you're supposed to insert the tool into to stop the water pump pulley from turning see you can take the bolts out of the front of it so that you can change the tensioner! I need my car back as soon as possible. please forgive the typos it seems that my touch screen AndThisPage are not compatible. If possible you can text me the picture at (757) 335-3539. I have read how people have used various tools to get this pullet stationary scad the bolts out, but I have not seen a decent picture of the situation in thE Car Saying " here put it in this spot" . I found two openings in the back that i can get at but when Insert a tool/nail whatever, I don't find a matching hole in the pulley that will stop it from spinning. Frustrated. Help!

I've only ever used a strap wrench, cheap enough at Sears.

The service manual shows a special tool which fits over the lip of the pulley wheel. I've never heard of any hole in the wheel which you can use to apply a counter-hold to loosen the clutch or remove the pulley wheel bolts.

You may be able to undo the pulley by putting the belt back on to hold it tight. The 4 hex Allen bolts are a pig to remove. I ended up removing the water pump and undo the pulley on a bench. Replace the tensioner then put everything back. Good luck.

Look on the engine side of the pulley. See where the 4 pulley bolts screw through the mounting ring on the pump. In line with those 4 holes is a 5th, empty hole. Put an allen wrench in the open hole and it will rotate until it hits a rib on the pump housing. The pump is now locked in that direction and you can remove the bolts.

"Cheap Enough At Sears". Sears Is Almost 40 Miles Away 80 RoundTrip And The Car Is Brokie .... I Know, when I first moved out here is to think I'll just jump in the car and go get such and such, or I'll call somebody for a ride. then the distance dawned on me, and sometimes it's better to figure out how to fix it with what you got if you can then to spend two hours and twenty dollars driving back and forth in someone else's car. I have a wrench that I can make work in this situation, the technical post on this website misled me. thank you for posting a picture of the wWrench, that helped abundantly! wrench
I have used a small pipewrench sideways of the back of the pully , carefully so the teeth don't hit the grooves. Cheers Dan

Why are you removing the water pump pulley to get to the belt tensioner?

You can remove the water pump instead of removing the pulley if you do not want to buy any tools or had butchered up the 4 bolts. That is what I did.

Is the 601's belt path that different from the 603's?
On my 603 you can remove the tensioner without removing the WP pulley. Just remove the tensioner roller, then the tensioner arm unscrews. I actually changed mine in a parking lot with the fan in place. It's very tight but possible. -J
