The spec should be on it somewhere, probably underneath. I agree that it should be 1000uF, but best check the part closely.

Replaced the 1000uF and the 22uF capacitors and reflowed. Symptoms are the same. A couple of the valve on the switchover get warm too. The one for the foot vents and the one that loops around to the end of the bottom row.

Wish there was a easy way to simplify the climate controls. A/c on or off. Wheel to adjust coolant into the heater core, direct air flow selection and fan speed. That's all I want or need.

This is my thinking as well. Looking into that black hole of wheels/sensors/circuit boards...are you kidding me?
All I need is the heater/defroster! Its on or its off!

You can simplify it..but its not easy.

A few switches to map 12V to the switch over valves will take care of vent controls...

I think there already is a manual fan speed control switch on the 190...at least mine is...

The temperature wheel.. not sure 100%. The 190 uses a vacuum controlled valve IIRC...so some kind of pot that can control that maybe?

So no want for air conditioning or vent control?

I want those things. lol.

I would like to see how the system performs when it is working. I used to have a Mercury Sable that had automatic air conditioning and I really liked it, but it had automatic fan control too. That system had it's issues too. It would get stuck on heat until I ran its diagnostics and erased its code.

To me, diagnosing these systems would be much easier with a circuit diagram. With a circuit diagram you can pretty much know what voltages you should get and where... makes troubleshooting much easier.

I do not know what I am going to do with it. I leave for Spain in about a week and will be gone for a month so I probably will not have time to mess with it until I return.

Oh and yes the heater valve is vacuum.

Nope, I live and drive on the West Coast, I seldom venture more than 15 miles inland from the beach. Heater/defroster and I am done.

I have built my own heater systems in Vanagon's (custom wetsuit dryers!) and I am sure I will figure out how to butcher this system to get what I need.

Look into the Arduino. You could probably make a pretty cool PID heater with it.

A/C would be the easiest to bypass...a simple on/off switch routed through the low and high pressure switches like 90%+ of all other cars from that era.

Vent controls would require dash removal for modification..a big PITA. Maybe there would be a way to set the most desirable venting and not change it? Need to be able to get defrost on demand although you could send part of the airflow to defrost all the time?

Replace the heater control module with a manual one and operate with a choke cable.

Just get some switches and wire them to the switch over valves. That should give you vent pod control.
